Résumé
À la fin du 19e siècle, Henry Howard apparaît comme le premier aliéniste du Québec à tenter de développer un traité théorique de la folie. Pourquoi ce bouleversement soudain ? Il y avait de nombreuses théories européennes qui auraient pu suffire. L'auteur tente de montrer les multiples connexions de ce projet théorique aux problèmes socio-politiques de la société québécoise. Howard essaie, dans la perspective de la théorie qu'il élabore, d'intervenir dans les discussions importantes qui affectent le Québec : l'ultramontanisme – , le problème de l'éducation universelle obligatoire, la moralité publique. À un niveau plus professionnel, il tente d'intervenir dans la dispute opposant la compétence judiciaire et médicale dans les cas de plaidoyer de folie, aussi bien que dans la question du statut scientifique et social de l'aliéniste. L'implication dans ces luttes se manifeste beaucoup dans le traité de Howard aussi bien au niveau des concepts eux-mêmes, et dans leur architecture, qu'au niveau thématique et dans les applications qu'il dessine naturellement. Il n'est pas seulement externe et contingent mais il travaille dans le texte lui-même. L'article tente de suggérer qu'au moment où le traité sur l'aliéniste – qui deviendrait la science que nous connaissons aujourd'hui – cherche à se structurer lui-même dans la théorie, il ne peut briser son attachement à son contexte social déterminant et alors, ignorant son rôle idéologique, il réussit en réalité à créer l'illusion et l'impression d'un processus progressif, le tout étant circonstanciel et ayant un intérêt direct.
SUMMARY
At the end of the 19th century, Henry Howard appeared as the first Quebec "aliéniste" to attempt to develop an inclusive theoretical treatise on the question of madness. Why this sudden upheaval ? There existed numerous european theories ^ that might have sufficed. The author attempts to show the multiple connections of this theoretical pro-lect to the socio-political problems of québécois society. Howard tries, from the perspective of the theory which he elaborates, to intervene in the major discussions affecting Quebec: ultra montanism, the problem of universal compusory education, public morality. At a more professional level he attempts to intervene in the legal dispute opposing judicial and medical competence in the cases of insanity pleas, as well as in the question of the scientific and social status of the "aliéniste". The involvement in these struggles manifests itself in Howard's treatise as much at the level of the concepts themselves, and their architecture, as at the thematic level and in the applications which he naturally draws. It is not onty external and contingent but works on the text from the inside as well. The article attempts to suggest that at the very moment that the treatise on the alienated-which would become the "science" that we know today— seeks to structure itself into a theory, it cannot break its attachment to its determining social context and that, ignoring its ideological role it, in truth, succeeds only in creating illusion and the impression of a progressive process, all the while being circumstantial and having a verted interest.
