Summary
This article examines three initiatives devoted to the dissemination of contemporary art in Nova Scotia that were begun in the 1990s in order to better understand the place of “belonging” to a territory in art world practices in peripheral regions. At one extreme, the Contemporary Art Projects Society organizes events with the goal of demonstrating the links of Haligonians (people from Halifax) to international networks. By contrast, Studio Ralley showcases the singularities of the region and local characteristics, treating the rural, peripheral context of the regions as a strength. The initiative known as Artspots (the title of a series of short television shows and of a web site) draws on a mixed strategy that presents contemporary art in a local context while targeting a national audience.
