L’authenticité du flou

Résumé

À notre époque de flux d’information, le flou n’est pas apprécié. On ne veut pas « rester dans le flou ». On considère qu’une photo floue est une photo ratée : pourtant, pour un photographe, il y a plus d’informations dans une image floue. Il en est de même sur la scène de théâtre : la fumée agrandit l’espace en dévoilant les faisceaux lumineux. Le flou scénique – obtenu, selon les époques, à l’aide de coton, de tulle ou de fumée – sait cacher la médiation, mais il sait aussi la dénoncer. La fumée – le flou vivant – ajoute une touche cinématographique à toutes les surfaces. Ainsi, les jeux intermédiatiques entre l’image en mouvement et le décor en contreplaqué sont plus anciens que le « théâtre écranomaniaque » d’aujourd’hui – ils remontent à la machine à vapeur de Wagner et la lanterne nébuleuse de Guyot. La fumée n’est-elle pas plus authentique sur la scène que la vidéo, car elle ne fait qu’imiter la nature qui, avec ses brouillards, résiste à notre phobie du net ?

Abstract

Nowadays, while information rules the world, blurry phenomena are not much appreciated. We tend to link fuzziness to a lack of information. A photo that is out of focus is considered a fiasco although, for a photographer, there might be more information in a blurry image. Things are similar on the stage: fog makes the space bigger while revealing the rays of light. Scenic blurring – with the help of either cotton, gauze or smoke, depending on the times – can hide mediation, but it can also reveal it. The fog with its constant motion adds a touch of cinematography to any surface. Thus, the intermedial games between the “moving images” and the good old set elements in plywood are older than today’s “screen-crazy theatre” – they go back to Guyot’s nebulous lantern and Wagner’s steam machine. Isn’t smoke more authentic on the stage than video, considering the fact that it is a direct imitation of nature, and that nature with its spontaneous fogs is one of the few factors that resist our clarity phobia?
