Abstract
Recently, Israel Finkelstein published an article about the archaeological site of Tell el-Ful and against its usual identification as Gibeah. Of course, the analysis of the stratigraphy is correct but the interpretations are not totally convincing because we cannot continue to interpret a site with the biblical facts in our mind. Concerning Gibeah, after the analysis of its mentions in the Bible, we cannot say that it was indeed King Saul’s fortified place, and the crime of Gibeah (Judges 19-21), or the days of Gibeah (Hoseah 9-10), could be an event not so ancient — not before but after Saul. Indeed, we cannot keep the biblical chronology if we want to have access to the ancient history of the Israel’s kingdom. The scientific archaeology is necessary for this but the exegesis of the biblical texts must be led without any theological concern.
