Abstract
The value of the long-standing archaeological excavations at Philippi, where Paul is said to have preached for the first time on European soil, lies in the opportunity they offer to reflect on the relationships between the Bible and archaeology. The historical record has often been characterized by over-interpretation and anachronism, the intention being to make the remains ‘fit’ with the Acts of the Apostles, or, on the contrary, to upset Christian tradition by putting forward risky hypotheses about new discoveries and the silences in the texts. At Philippi the historical interest of the inscriptions outweighs that of the remains and allows us to restore a religious and cultural context to the Christian mission in the medium term, or indeed for the exact period when the apostle was there. But above all it is the construction of the memory of St Paul over the course of the first three centuries, as founding hero and martyr-intercessor, which the archaeological remains allow us to study.
