Abstract
The first prophetic quote of the Gospel of Matthew (1 : 23) is certainly the most commented in the New Testament and the quoted text (Is 7 : 14) is one of the most difficult to interpret. This article develops in a postcolonial perspective the intertextual relationship between Isaiah 6-12 and Mt 1-2 to present these texts as counter narratives of imperial power. Focusing on the broader political situations of these two references offers new interpretive possibilities. By rewriting Isaiah promises, Matthew’s gospel allowed its first century readers to put into perspective the injustices and theological questioning they experience after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70. In Isaiah and Matthew, the birth of the Emmanuel is shown as a sign of resistance to imperial power. Recalling Isaiah and his context is a way of opening a critical space against imperial values.
