L'abandon du traducteur — A major landmark for contemporary translation studies, Walter Benjamin's essay on translation is also a text central to his body of work and to modern reflection by way of its links to the philosophy of language and the philosophy of history. It is in this perspective that L. Lamy and A. Nouss offer this new translation accompanied by a comprehensive critical apparatus intended to facilitate its understanding and to restore its conceptual density.

La réception de l'essai sur la traduction dans le domaine français — Cette recension critique rend compte d'une dizaine de titres ayant traité de l'essai sur la traduction de Walter Benjamin afin d'en présenter les grandes lignes de la réception dans le domaine français. L'auteur y montre comment, sauf exceptions, l'essai est souvent lu de manière partiale, restrictive ou coupé du reste de l'oeuvre.

Reception of the Essay on Translation in French — Eleven studies in French of Walter Benjamin's essay on translation are examined here with a view to determining the way the essay has been received by French readers. The article demonstrates that all too often the essay has been read in a partial and biased manner, that its meaning has been restricted, and that the text has been divorced from Benjamin's other works.

The Clandestine without Heirs : Rites of Interpretation Practiced on Walter Benjamin's Essay on Translation — Based on a well-defined corpus of critical appraisals of Benjamin's essay on translation, this article examines the various interpretations the work has generated. Their apparent contradictions require of the reader a sustained process of translation, a process which is, so to speak, already encoded in Benjamin's poetics. Far from being a case of esoteric musing, this critical resistance to any kind of "explaining away" indicates

rather that any theory of translation must "translate" itself in the element where it attempts to provide an explanation.

Translation, Quotation, Iterability (Walter Benjamin) — Translatability can be considered a special case of the general property of language Derrida called "iterability." By focusing on this property I seek both to clarify the place of translation in Benjamin's thought with respect to other modes of iteration, such as critical commentary and quotation, and to suggest a different way of thinking about translation.

Like quotation, translation does not "use" the original text, but rather "mentions" or "names" it. Thus we can understand Benjamin's defense of word-for-word translation (Wörtlichkeit); if translation, like quotation, denotes the text of the original, then what it translates is not the sense of the original, but its word. Similarly, what translation connotes is translation itself considered as a possible act, or to put the point in Benjamin's and Rodolphe Gasché's terms, it communicates translatability.

Iterability, translatability, and quotability are that part of the structure of a linguistic entity that differs from the entity itself, and points toward something beyond it. For Benjamin, that beyond is pure language.

Zohn's translation of Benjamin's "Die Aufgabe des Übersetzers" — In 1968 Harry Zohn published a pioneering translation of "Die Aufgabe des Übersetzers" that for many years was the only form in which Benjamin's famous essay was known to most readers in English. These notes examine certain problems raised by Zohn's translation.

La traduction de "Die Aufgabe des Übersetzers" de Benjamin par Zohn — En 1968, Harry Zohn a publié une traduction pionnière de « Die Aufgabe des Übersetzers » qui resta longtemps la seule forme sous laquelle l'essai célèbre était connu de la plupart des lecteurs anglophones. Ces notes examinent certains problèmes posés par la traduction faite par Zohn.
