Résumé
Il s’agit de s’interroger sur les relations que peuvent soutenir deux types de discours ou deux types d’approche de la nature : d’une part celle qui fait de l’environnement naturel un objet de préoccupation morale, et d’autre part celle qui fait de la nature un objet d’appréciation esthétique. De quelle manière une esthétique de la nature peut-elle prétendre compléter ou fonder une éthique de l’environnement ? Comment peut-on passer de la considération de la beauté de la nature à l’idée selon laquelle nous aurions des devoirs à l’endroit des entités du monde naturel ?
Le croisement entre une éthique et une esthétique environnementales est chose faite depuis plus de 20 ans dans les pays anglo-saxons, où se sont formés deux courants philosophiques qui sont assez rapidement entrés en conjonction l’un avec l’autre : d’une part un courant d’éthique environnementale, et d’autre part un courant d’esthétique naturaliste, que l’on appelle aussi « esthétique environnementale ou « esthétique cognitiviste ».
Les modalités selon lesquelles se sont effectuées cette rencontre sont très complexes, et ont donné lieu (et donnent encore lieu) à de nombreux débats. Cet article se fixe pour objectif d’examiner ce que certains éthiciens de l’environnement sont allés chercher du côté d’une esthétique cognitiviste de l’environnement, en resserrant l’attention autour de l’une des figures majeures de chaque domaine de recherche considéré : Holmes Rolston, pour l’éthique environnementale, et Allen Carlson, pour l’esthétique cognitiviste.
