AB - The patriarchal tradition divides the world into two separate spheres, male and female, thus denying the dual origin of human beings. By emphasizing the heritage transmitted from father to son, the tradition also ignores the importance of maternal filiation in men’s lives. La démarche du crabe questions patriarchal male identity by foregrounding the dual origin of human beings and the importance of maternal filiation for men. The novel’s female characters lead the protagonist to follow the traces of his female ancestors, to rediscover his repressed female aspects, and to rethink his identity. Male identity then becomes an enigma that includes multiple elements (present and absent, male and female, repressed and manifest), over which a man can never exercise complete control.
