Les têtes à Patriote : une figure retorse au XIXe siècle

Résumé

La figure du Patriote a une généalogie complexe du fait qu'elle est bicéphale. Dans cet article, à l'aide de divers objets discursifs, nous analyserons les deux grandes faces de la figure, à savoir le tribun et le paysan. En nous arrêtant aux fondements historiques et discursifs de la figure du tribun, emblème de Papineau, on s'aperçoit que cet aspect de la figure a été construit dans les moments heureux du parti Patriote et réduit au silence dans les décennies qui suivent. Au contraire, dans la suite des discours, par le biais de l'histoire de François-Xavier Garneau, des romans de la terre et de l'illustration d'Henri Julien, le Patriote sera transfiguré en « habitant ». En prenant en compte cette évolution de la figure et les différentes modélisations discursives auxquelles elle donne lieu, nous entamons ici un parcours sériel de ces textes et de ces images, en montrant comment ces réaménagements reprennent et maintiennent des traits qu'on retrouvait sur l'autre face de la figure.

Abstract

The genealogy of the Patriot is a complex one in that the figure of the Patriot has two heads. In this article, we will use a variety of discursive objects to analyse the figure's two major faces: the tribune and the peasant. In focusing on the historical and discursive foundations of the tribune — whose emblem is Papineau — we see that this aspect of the figure was constructed during the Patriot party's fortunate period, then reduced to silence in the following decades. In discourse as it subsequently developed, through the historical writings of François-Xavier Garneau, novels of the earth and the illustrations of Henri Julien, the Patriot was transfigured, becoming the "habitant". Taking into consideration the figure's evolution and the various discursive models arising from it, we offer a serial examination of these texts and images, showing how the new patterns take up and maintain features that originally belonged to the figure's other face.
