AB - The proposed sonnet paying tribute to the author of Les Fleurs du mal that Nelligan drafted under the title “Le tombeau de Charles Baudelaire” has received little attention from critics, who have provided no sustained analysis of it. And yet, its unusual style and imaginative resonance bear witness to an undeniable, even remarkable, work of development—in both the psychological and artistic senses—that provides this “draft” not only with the unity of structure required for it to function and be recognized as an authentic poem, but also, and more importantly, with a rare degree of originality. Through the strangely “local” or “colloquial” aesthetic of this poem, Nelligan is attempting, with an ingenious and paradoxical approach, to establish himself in a favourable position within the symbolic space of Baudelairean modernity. This is what we will seek to demonstrate after offering a brief commentary on the text.
