The Libyan is only known through some accounts of ancient authors of which Hérodote 's and Diodore's are the most famous. Although the accounts of the latter are largely dependent on mythology, some of themes raised in book III were echoed by the Arabic accounts of the Medieval Age. Some of the scattered traces of the Amazon epic can be traced back to Vth century BC and up to XVth century AD. It is certainly an elaborated image which survived through the ages, but which raises the problem of the nature of the Lybian feminine society of old antiquity.
