AbstractAfter many years of silence, the Algerian War (1954-1962) is presently gaining more and more political importance, thus confronting France with its responsibilities during the fight for sovereignty that once opposed it to Algerian nationalism. During its 8 years, every stage of a « dirty war » was attained : disinformation, propaganda, murder, torture, collective massacres, etc., as one can read in historical and literary works. However, while several authors have been inspired by this historical period, very few have made it the main subject of all their writing. The analysis concentrates on Azzedine Bounemeur – the Algerian author most devoted to the cause of the Algerian war – who, apart from fiction, presents a chronological and highly epic history of Algerian nationalism.

In this paper I summarize the results of my research on violent death and the absence of the body in relation to the last military dictatorship in Argentina, which includes not only the victims of state repression but also those killed in the Malvinas' War. To this end I worked with two organizations of relatives, "Familiares de Desaparecidos y detenidos por razones políticas" and "Familiares de Caídos en la Guerra de Malvinas e Islas del Atlántico Sur". We will show how relatives joined groups after the death and disappearance of their loved ones, establishing interpretive frameworks to make sense of violent death and bear the losses. These interpretive frameworks show strong feedback with everyday practices and beliefs about death, where specific bonds between the dead and the living are built.

New digital forms, particularly computer and video games pose a challenge to the cultural status that film has enjoyed for decades. This challenge provoked an anxiety about new media reflected in a series of films in the 1990s, including eXistenZ and The Matrix. Hollywood filmmakers have responded to the challenge with a two fold strategy: they have adopted computer-graphic special effects, while maintaining a commitment to linear narrative and transparent representation. Recently, the DVD has led the film industry to explore hybrid forms of representation and even interactivity.
