Historically, research on pragmatic translation, namely in the case of specialized fields, has been neglected, since Western translation studies were mainly established around questions pertaining to literary translation. Yet, pragmatic translation is largely dominant in professional practice. Similarly, professional translators and translation students have been reluctant to engage with translation studies research. We hypothesize that these negative prejudices, on both sides, originate with some of the founding, seminal authors of translation studies. This conference thus explores the theoretical positions expressed by Berman, Schleiermacher, and Ortega y Gasset; it also questions Holmes' map, before proposing an alternative map, one that opens all possibilities, from the point of both research and practice. Moreover, given the development of computer tools, we are convinced that translators will increasingly have to present themselves as experts capable of offering adequate guidance to clients. Finally, we propose to highlight a number of research perspectives, related more specifically to specialised fields, which can blossom in the context of translation studies, keeping in mind our deliberate intent to reconcile translation practice with translation research and so-called “theory,” and vice versa.

This study proposes to analyse the student's academic records that currently hold the credits gathered from the program framework, to determine if the grades, inherited from the courses, allows a valid judgment about the competences developed at the end of the curriculum. The concept of curricular construct validity is introduced to qualify the judgment that will be issued. Confirmatory factorial analyses allow confronting the theoretical Course-Competencies mapping against the empirical data in order to validate the judgments issued. The analyses were conducted on 164 students from a university located in the province of Québec, who graduated from a secondary teaching program between 2002 and 2010. The results confirm that the evaluations are structured into four groups of competencies: educational foundations, teaching acts, social aspects and professional identity. Advantages and limits of this analysis will be discussed.

Scaffolding in a work setting is an important part of a professional education program. The hypothesis that a supervisor in nursery has offered adaptive, explicit and efficient scaffolding is explored and a model is proposed. Sequential data are gathered from 13 nursery apprentices in a clinical setting using an observation grid. As expected, the transitions between the states and the pedagogical actions highlight a relationship that confirms the hypothesis investigated. The pattern of transitions between the states also reveals a general learning model with hidden states.

Using an online questionnaire, this qualitative content study examined the concepts of information society and information overload with a small group of students. Artistic representations of these concepts were shown to the students in order to determine their perceptions. The results highlight the value of information and a strong community presence along with a singular relation to time. The data was analysed using a conceptual framework of four authors, namely Daniel Bell, Manuel Castells, Roland Barthes and Lev Manovich.

For more than fifty years, private organizations and professional associations have determined normatives rules in the field of human experimentation. Consequently, bioethical rules are numerous and originate in many sources. Technically, they only seem to have a moral value. As such, they are not to be interpreted in an absolute manner and they are more of a guide that can be modified according to circumstances. Despite important distinctions between bioethics and law, we submit that the latter has conferred on bioethical rules an authority which transcends the field of morals. Indeed, not only do we see trends emanating from bioethical rules and their underlying premises being assimilated by the law, certain rules are now an integral part of the judicial corpus via legislation, jurisprudence and doctrine. This text aims at demonstrating this premiss. First, we will examine certain aspects of bioethics, particularly its origins, the scope of its application and different rules which govern ethics in research. Secondly, we will analyze the meeting of the law and bioethics. We will examine its impact on the law, the influences of the bioethics on legal standards and the integration of bioethical rules into Quebec's judicial corpus.
