AbstractThis article presents the polemic context surrounding questions of polyvalent skills of primary level schoolteachers through an analysis of the political, institutional, pedagogical, and conceptual issues involved. Based on the results of a recent survey, the authors describe the feelings of attachment that these young schoolteachers have for this type of pedagogical organization. They examine how the effects of both school opening and the increase of teachers' tasks contributed to decrease the practice of polyvalence understood in its traditional sense as an individual teacher's prerogative and a requirement influenced by school geography.
