This paper provides a critical theoretical overview of a séries of exhibition evaluation studies undertaken in the Department of Psychology at the University of Surrey over the last fourteen years. Three distinct periods can be identified. The first research studies were exhibit-centred. This was replaced by a cognitive approach, in which attention focused on the visitor. The research paradigm in which we now operate, takes a socio-cognitive perspective and reflects the social and educational context in which muséums are experienced. The paper condudes with a discussion of the implications of thèse approaches for both research and exhibition design.

This article targets the career of the first “ Henry” whose name appeared in history, with the title of dux Austrasiorum or “ duke of the Franks of the East”. It relies solely on written sources -Annales Fuldenses, Regino of Prüm’s Chronicle, Annales Vedastini, or even Abbo’s long poem on the Siege of Paris by the Normans. Born around 830/ 840 into a count family settled in the upper Main basin, in eastern Franconia, Henri spent most of his life as a warlord and adviser to the Carolingian kings Louis the Younger and Charles the Fat, sons of Louis the German. On their service, he fought their rivals from ancient Lotharingia or the leaders of the Viking bands who went up the courses of the Rhine or the Meuse, either through victory on the battlefield or by building machinations to eliminate them. He died in 886 under the walls of Paris, where he had been called by the local authorities to defend the city besieged by the Vikings of the Seine. This death made him a hero felt in the battle against the “ pagans”, almost a martyr ; his name has been passed on to some of his imperial and royal descent.
