1947 — A nitrogen balance study of protein supplements in the hog ration.Abstract
A scarcity of proteins suitable for the supplementation of animal feeds has existed for several years. Present indications are that this shortage is likely to continue, in view of an expanding livestock industry, increased consciousness of the importance of proteins on the part of feeders, and the world food situation in general. Consequently, a widespread search is being conducted for new materials to serve in this capacity, and information on their efficiency as protein supplements is important with a view to recommending their most efficient use. The most acute shortage has occurred in the case of proteins of animal and … Read more

1947 — Adam Mabane and the French party in Canada : 1760-1791.Abstract
This thesis does not attempt to present any complete picture of the period 1760-1791 in Canada, even though the French party of Adam Mabane was an important influence in Canadian affairs throughout most of those years. It attempts, rather, to trace the growth of one political group, and many of the events of the period that did not seem to pertain directly to that growth have thus been omitted. More particularly, this thesis is subject to the same limitations from which the French party suffered throughout its career: Its emphasis is entirely upon the political, judicial, and religious aspects of … Read more

1947 — A new determination of the velocity of sound in air using counter-chronograph and microphones.Abstract
It has been noted that in previous determinations of the velocity of sound in air, direct measurements of the velocity of sharp sound pulses, carried out over long distances, in the open, have yielded consistently lower values than indirect methods employing continuous sound of a definite frequency. The average of direct methods is about 330.8, and the average of indirect methods about 331«5im/s. Direct measurements of the velocity of sound in air have been made in the laboratory over a distance of 50 feet, using a high speed vacuum-tube counter-chronograph, microphones, and a spark discharge as a sound source. Since … Read more

1947 — The effect of alternating electrical fields on the polymerization of styrene.Abstract
Investigation of the effect of an electrical field on a chemical reaction involves the study of a system acting under the influence of an external perturbing force. It is of interest, therefore, to consider, in brief outline, the nature of this force, and the energy associated with it. Treatises on this subject are available in standard references (1, 2). The intensity of an electrical field is a measure of the force exerted on a unit charge when at rest in the field. The field intensity at any distance from a point charge is given by Coulomb's Law, and in practical … Read more

1947 — An appraisal of the report of the Economic Policy Committee of Jamaica, 1945.Abstract
Quite apart from World War II, the years following 1934 may well be the most important in the history of the British West Indies in general, and of Jamaica in particular A series of labour disturbances over the British Caribbean area led to the West India Royal Commission of 1938-39, and this Commission made an exhaustive examination of the whole range of conditions, social and economic, prevailing in the (1) British colonies. Subsequently, under provision of the Colonial Development and Welfare Act, 1940, His Majestyfs Government appointed a Comptroller to work out, in collaboration with the local governments, long term … Read more

1947 — A study of mechanical factors in GR-S bottle polymerizations.Abstract
The present process employed in the manufacture of GR-3 type synthetic rubber is that of emulsion polymerization. This method has the advantage of being easily controlled as well as possessing a faster rate of reaction than either bulk phase or solution polymerization (1, 2). The GR-S system discussed herein is made up of monomer, water, catalyst, modifier and emulsifying agent, which, upon agitation at a moderate temperature, results in the formation of a heterogeneous mixture. This complicates investigation of the locus of polymerization. The ease of control is due, in part at least, to the heat transfer from one medium … Read more

Knowledge o£ the importance or a nutritional factor in the etiology of rickets may be said to date from the pioneer work of Mellanby in 1919. The therapeutic value of fish oils tor rickets. although recognized for centuries~ was shown to be due to a factor quite distinct from vitamin A. The exact identity of the factor. however~ was obscured for some time when it was found that sunlight and ultraviolet irradiation also had curative effects. In 1926 accidental discovery of the role of cholesterol and related sterols made it possible to conclude that sunlight and cod liver oil cure … Read more

1947 — The geology of the Goldfields area, Saskatchewan.Abstract
An area has been mapped in detail in the vicinity of the Box property ih the Goldfields district. The oldest formations are quartzites, dolomites, and various schists and gneisses. These are cut by granites and gabbros. The distribution and metamorphism of the rocks of the area are described. Cooke has considered the gabbro as younger than the granite, but the writer agrees with Alcock in considering the granite younger than the gabbro. The problem of the "Box granite" is discussed. The writer has shown that this" formation is composite, and has separated.on.the map gr.anitized sedimentary rocks from granites. Read more

1947 — The characterisation of a new hydroxy acid isolated from Spanish ergot.Abstract
Holden and Diver (1) in 1935 reported the isolation of a potassium acid salt (C7H9011NK) from Spanish ergot, and an acid (C6H8010) derived from this salt, that had not been reported before as constituents of ergot. The analysis and chemical properties of this acid led these authors to postulate the following structure for this substance, COOH.CHOH.C(OH)(COOH).C(0H)2.COOH (1,1,2,3, tetrahydroxypropane 1,2,3, tricarboxylic acid). The proposed identity of this acid relates It structurally to citric acid, COOH.CHg.C(OH)(COOH).CH2.COOH, (2 hydroxypropane 1,2,3, tricarboxylic acid), and for this reason, was named citergic acid, under which name it will be referre to.[...] Read more

This investigation arose out of a problem which was presented to the Physical Chemistry Laboratoties of McGill University, and represented as being of some national importance. During the war years works had been erected in western Canada for the production of large quantities of ammonia, and it was desirable that a peacetime use for this chemicalbe found. Furthennore there are large supplies of sodiumsulphate in the Canadian west. The world-wide success ofthe ammonia-soda process applied to sodium chloride led to the inquiry as to whether the same process could be applied to sodium sulphate. Preliminary investigation indicated that the formation … Read more

Very often these foci are found in the cerebral cortex. The symptoms before, during and following the seizures point to definite localizations. However, certain forms of epilepsy have defied attempts at localization. Seizures consisting of generalized convulsions, without detectable aura, involving large portions of the central nervous system, are as yet difficult to understand as the outflow of a localized source or focus within the brain.[...] Read more

The region around an electrically charged object is considered to be pervaded by an electrostatic field, the idea of a field being adopted to explain the "action at a distance of the charge. The field strength at any point is measured by the work required to move a unit charge to this point against the repulsion of the field. The field strength, or potential gradient, is commonly expressed in volts/cm. and the potential difference across the field is measured in volts. Capacity is defined by the equation QrCE where Q, is the quantity of the charge in coulombs, E is … Read more

The mode of attack by ozone appears to be the primary formation of a heterocyclic five membered ring, at one of the double bonds, resembling a peroxide and epioxide. Recently, Hunter and Williams (28) have succeeded in converting carotene to vitamin A aldehyde by the carefully controlled oxidation with hydrogen peroxide, and subsequently converting this to the alcohol by reducing it with aluminium isopropoxide. The consumer is the individual who acts at the end of the economic chain. Land is farmed and mined in order to produce natural resources. Out of these resources industries are created. Some of the products go directly to the consumer, others are transformed into capital goods. The latter serve as materials for further processes of production, the output of which is again divided between capital and consumer goods. In a modern economy this development goes on through many stages which may be called the diversification of production. The final result in all cases is the production of goods and … Read more

1947 — Transformation of the steroid molecule to permit the inclusion of isotopic carbon.Abstract
The biochemist has been aided greatly in recent years in developing his knowledge of the metabolism of organic and inorganic substances in biological systems through the use of isotopes as tracers. Since the chemical properties of an element are determined solely by the number and distribution of electrons surrounding the nucleus, it is apparent that all isotopes of a given element should behave in an identical manner when participating in a chemical reaction. It is this fact which enables one to use separated isotopes to label a compound and to use it as a tracer in a chemical reaction or … Read more
