1964 — Ludwig Tieck und die spanische Literatur.Abstract
Among German Romanticists Ludwig Tieck was undoubtedly the poet who was the most familiar with Spanish literature. Though some aspects of Tieck's relationship with Spanish literature have been studied in the past, there has hitherto been no objective survey of all its facets. By evaluating Tieck's knowledge of Spanish literature and assessing the Spanish influences which can be detected in his works, this thesis will attempt to correct some of the previous misconceptions about Tieck's lifelong association with Spanish letters. 1964 — Comparative action of a microbial insecticide on insects.Abstract
[...] With the growing use of commercial products formulated around insecticidal micro-organisms in both large scale field pest control and in experimental work, it is becoming more and more important to know what hosts are susceptible to those and how the mortality is produced. The possible eftects of these materials on complex ecosystems are still unknown. The commercially produced materials themselves should be evaluated both as to etfectiveness as control measures and action on different insect species. Studies have made it apparent that these materials may be different in their effectiveness from unprocessed laboratory grown cultures.[...] Read more

1964 — The development of Hegel’s philosophy of religion in his early writings.Abstract
The program of this thesis is to trace the development of Hegel's thought in the writings of his youth as they evolved to and influenced the thinking of his maturity. These writings are of particular interest for they are characterized by a flexibility, a vitality, an historical, existential insight and concern which is relatively lacking in his later works. Furthermore, we can see in them the germs of his later thought. [...] Read more

1964 — The effect of food deprivation on self determined "thresholds" of hypothalamic self-stimulation.Abstract
Experiments utilizing techniques of ablation, as well as electrical and chemical stimulation, have all implicated the lateral hypothalamus as an area of central importance in the regulation of food intake. Anand and Brobeck (1951) were the first to demonstrate that bilateral lesions placed lateral to the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus in both rats and cats were consistently associated with the development of a temporary or permanent aphagia (refusal to eat). This finding has been duplicated in various other animal species including birds (Andersson, Fabricus, Svensson & Akerman, 1960: Feldman, Larsson, Dimick, & Leprovsky, 1957) and monkeys (Anand, Dua & Shoenberg, 1955). … Read more

1964 — A Nonlinear slip-ring primitive for generalised electric machine theory.Abstract
Since the invention of calculating machinery, the attention of mathematicians has been turning from the search for methods of integrating differentia! equations to the investigation of theorems of existence. Recent advances in storedprogram digital computer technology have contributed to the acceleration of this trend and quickened interest in numerical analysis as well. Numerical techniques now exist for the integration of all ordinary and many partial differential equations; but it is clearly imperative to know beforehand whether the sought solution exists at all. The need for existence proofs is frequently neglected by engineers on the supposition that any physical problem must … Read more

1964 — Revision of certain pyrgomorphid genera previously included in the Orthacridini (Orthoptera), together with descriptions of closely related new genera.Abstract
The first independant treatment of the acridoid family Orthoptera, Pyrgomorphidae, was that of Bolivar (1884). A revision was published later by Bolivar (1904-5) and this was summarised with s1ight modification shortly afterwards (Bolivar, 1909). No comprehensive review has been pub1ished subsequently, although a revision of the tribal arrangement was recently the subject of study by Akbar (1963) who gives a full review of the various changes that have occurred at the suprageneric level up to the present. 1964 — Histochemical studies on the developing adrenal gland of the chick (Gallus domesticus).Abstract
During the past decade or so, histochemists have paid increasing attention to the study of the adrenal gland. The majority of these studies have been on mammalian adrenals. The more noteworthy among them are those of Allen (1956, 1958), Arvy (1960, 196la), Deane et al., (1946, 1948), Erinko and his coworkers (1952, 1959, 1962, 1962a) Hillarp and Hokfelt (1954, 1955) and Wood (1963). These studies are correlated with the intensive biochemical investigations (reviews by Fieser and Fieser, 1959, Krayer, 1959, and Sourkes, 1962) and the recognition that one portion of the gland, namely the cortex, is essential for vertebrate life. … Read more

1964 — Paramagnetic relaxation of some iron group ions in magnesium oxide.Abstract
Electron spin-lattice relaxation rates have been investigated as a function of concentration and temperature between 1.8° and 4.2° Kelvin for cr3+, v2+, Mn2+, Co2+, and Ni2+ ions in MgO. Both pulse saturation and continuous saturation methods were used. A number of interesting aspects of the results are discussed. In at least some cases, the results are found to depend on the concentration of other impurities in the MgO lattice. A comparison is made with the relaxation rates predicted by theory. There are indications that for most of the samples studied, a relaxation process other than direct spin-lattice relaxation is dominant. … Read more

1964 — The relation between intelligence and transfer.Abstract
The purpose of the present research project is to investigate the area of individual differences in transfer and to relate these to individual differences in intelligence. This chapter reviews briefly the general area of transfer. Specific evidence from previous investigations of the relation between transfer and intelligence is presented and relevant evidence from closely associated areas of research is introduced. Finally, an attempt is made to provide a theoretical framework within which the relation between individual differences in transfer and intelligence may be understood and specific hypotheses presented. 1964 — An urban ventilation model applied to Montreal.Abstract
Time variations of soiling index at three locations in central Montreal are analysed. The average week end reduction in smoke is about 20 percent. Readings adjacent to Mount Royal Park are reduced by nearly one half, but no attempt is made to separate out the effects of the Park acting as a smokeless zone, and the mountain acting as an obstacle to the wind flow. Data from the elevated location, together with visual observations, suggests that at night the smoke over the city is usually confined to a layer several hundred feet deep. A simple model is developed to consider … Read more

1964 — Electronic computation in ear oximetry.Abstract
Ear oximetry is a technique used to determine the oxygen saturation of arterial blood in the intact man bya measurement of the absorption of red and infrared light passing through the ear. The withdrawal of an arterial sample of blood is not required. A theoretical investigation has revealed some of the sources of error inherent in present earpiece optical arrangements which have limited the overall accuracy of the technique. These errors cannot be corrected for in practice but may be eliminated or minimized by improved earpiece construction. Several methods of evaluating the accuracy and reliability of both instantaneous and continuous … Read more

1964 — Spin-lattice interaction in smoky quartz.Abstract
Detailed measurements have been made of the interactions between applied microwave phonons and the paramagnetic spin system in electron-irradiated quartz as a function of phonon power, monitor power, magnetic field angle, phononmonitor frequency separation and propagation direction. Static electric fields up to 10 kV/cm have been applied to irradiated quartz and the effect on the electron spin system studied for various conditions. Detailed cross-relaxation measurements revealed a new type of energy transfer between resonance lines of particular sites. A dielectric loss mechanism with Q = 13.40K was observed when measurements of the dielectric loss were extended from 16°K down to … Read more

1964 — Some twentieth century aspects of the Kenosis theoryAbstract
The object of this thesis is to see if the kenotic theory still gives the most meaningful Christology for today. This will be attempted by discussing and commentating on the views of a range of Twentieth Century theologians, comparing those who agree with those who are against kenosis. In an age when not only other religions are making themselves a real force in the world, but also when men are apt to make all sorts of differing statements about God, it seemed necessary to the writer to see just what is our Christian claim. Having completed the work of this … Read more

1964 — The reduction of interference through verbal repetition.Abstract
Studies of the effects of continuous verbal and written repetition or visual fixation generally report that subjects experience a decrement in the meaning or availability of' that word (e.g. Severance and Washburn, 1907; Bassett and Warne, 1919; Don and Weld, 1924; Lambert and Jakobovits, 1960). Recently Lambert and Jakobovits (1960), in attempting to develop a more objective measure of the change, devised a procedure based on the Semantic Differential Scales of Osgood, Suci, and Tannenbaum (1957). They used the term "semantic satiation" to refer to the decrease in extremity of rated meaning on these scales after repetition or fixation and … Read more

1964 — The late glacial geomorphic evolution of the Coaticook and Moe River Valleys, southern QuebecAbstract
Until very recently the south-western part of the Eastern Townships had not received a great deal of attention from geomorphologists; indeed in the Eastern Townships as a whole the work has been essentially of a reconnaissance nature. However, lying as it does at the junction of the Appalachian ridges to the south and the St. Lawrence Lowlands to the north, one might expect it to be interesting from two points of view: firstly in having morphological features common to both areas and secondly in offering the possibility of a comparison between their sequences of development. In recent years the attention … Read more

1964 — Calculation of nuclear spectra using the free reaction matrix.Abstract
The shell theory of nuclear structure is based on the assumption that there is an average attractive potential acting on a nucleon as it travels within the nucleus. The ground state of a nucleus zXan is then constructed by consecutively filling the lowest available levels of the potential well with Z protons and N neutrons in a manner consistent with the Pauli principle. Mayer and Jensen demonstrated that a considerable body of data could be understood in terms of this model if one included in the potential a spinorbit term. For example the magic numbers and the ground state spins … Read more

1964 — The place of the Dardanelles campaign in British strategy.Abstract
The First World War is remembered by many as a series of gigantic battles along a system of tranches in France. However, a number of other engagements, equally important, took place. One of the most prominent and fascinating of these engagements was the Dardanelles Campaign. Beginning in February 1915, the campaign lasted until the evacuation of the Cape Halles positions in January 1916. It originated as an attempt by the political leadership in London to seek a victory which would ease the Imperial situation, strengthen allied diplomacy with the neutrals, boost morale and achieve a victory without the expansive methods … Read more

1964 — Studies on nucleotide biosynthesis.Abstract
Whether from the standpoint of synthesis within the organism, or of absorption from the diet, glucose is quantitatively the most important carbohydrate available to the body for various purposes. To a considerable extent, therefore, the discussion of carbohydrates resolves itself into a consideration of the metabolism of glucose and its closely related derivatives. Glucose contributes a major part to the total energy production in most animal tissues. Several metabolic pathways are open to glucose: (a) conversion of glucose to glycogen for storage (b) utilization of glucose for energy production (c) utilization of glucose for the synthesis of other compounds, such … Read more

1964 — Nucleation in supercooled water.Abstract
Experiments were designed to determine the dependance of the heterogeneous nucleation process in liquid water on temperature and on the duration of supercooling. A specially constructed apparatus facilitated experiments with accurately controlled cooling-rates and constant temperatures. Samples of once-distilled tap-water and melted snow and hail were investigated in the form of 0.01 cc drops. The mean freezing temperatures of these samples are -20, -16 and -12 C respectively. For distilled water and for snow the mean temperature is lowered by 0.2 C for a twofold increase in the cooling-rate, for cooling rates in the range 0.5 to 4 (possibly to … Read more

1964 — The genetics and pathogenesis of a hereditary cataract in the mouse.Abstract
Cataract has been defined by Bourne as any pathological condition of the lens which alters its normal transparency. More specifically, a cataract is regarded as a loss of transparency of the lens, or an opacification occurring at any place in the lens or its capsule. Since the lens is an intricate physico-chemical system, changes in the physical and chemical state of the lens proteins which result in loss or transparency or opacification may be brought about by many agents: interference with the normal metabolic processes, alteration in hydrogen ion concentration, disturbance of osmotic equilibrium, and the harmful action of heat, … Read more

1964 — The genus Chorthippus (Orthoptera: Acrididae) in North America.Abstract
The genus Chorthippus in North America has been in a confused state for much of the past seventy years. The genus is typically Palaearctic, with many Old World species, and is represented in the Nearctic Region by what has, in more recent times, been listed as a single species. Hebard (1936) synonymized all specifie names which had been applied within this genus in North America, under the name of an European species. Subsequently this name was shown to be a nomen dubium, as the original description would not differentiate between two well known European species to which it could almost … Read more

Differences in egg colour among European sawfly species were known for many years, but no use of the information in basic taxonomic work was attempted, and there was little application in practical keys or identification tables. The egg colours of North American sawflies were unstudied, except for an occasional, casual reference to the colour in an individual species. The work reported in this thesis represents the first attempt to study sawfly egg pigmentation in an objective manner, and to apply the findings to taxonomic research, as well as to provide data for use in identification aids. The analytical methods were … Read more
