Argentaffin cells in the rat gastrointestinal tract were studied after silver methenamine and silver borate stains. Their morphology was similar to the classical descriptions. Other granulated cells, namely; globule leucocytes, mast cells and eosinophilic leucocytes were found in the gut wall. Their appearance and histochemical reactions were contrasted with those of argentaffin cells. Quantitative data were collected on the argentaffin , cell distribution in different regions of the gut. In spite of marked individual variation, the regional trends were consistent, with the highest concentrations of argentaffin cells in the pyloric autrum, duodenum, caecum and proximal colon. Radioautographic studies indicated that the synthesis of sulfated mucopolysaccharides (MPS) in cartilage, skin, aorta and liver was decreased in rats treated with relatively large doses of cortisone. Chemical analyses showed that the hexosamine and hexuronic acid content of aorta and skin was decreased as was also the glucosamine content of liver in the treated animals. The activity of fructose-6-p-D-glutamine amidotransferase was decreased in supernatants from the liver homogenates of rats treated with cortisone for three days or longer. Estradiol-17β-6,7-3H was administered to pregnant women both normal and diabetic. The specific activities of estrogen metabolites (estrone, estriol, 16-epiestriol, 16α-hydroxyestrone and 16-ketoestradiol- 17β) were measured following β-glucuronidase hydrolysis. The specific activity of urinary estriol was one-sixth and one-tenth that of estrone in two normal pregnancies and the specific activity of estrone was slightly greater or almost equal to those of 16-epiestriol, 16α-hydroxyestrone and 16-ketoestradiol-17β. The latter three were equal to each other, in normal pregnancy. The role of adrenergic nervous system in hypertension and in the antihypertensive action of methyldopa was investigated. Sustained metacorticoid and renal hypertension could be produced in control and in partial immunosympathectomised (IMS) rats. Hypertension was accompanied by an elevation of aortic sodium. In total-IMS rats, metacorticoid hypertension could not be produced and renal hypertension was not sustained; the aortic sodium was not elevated. Methyldopa was effective in reducing the blood pressure in all groups (normotensive and hypertensive control and partial-IMS, and normotensive total-IMS rats) of animals. The hypotensive effect of methyldopa was not influenced by hexamethonium, phenoxybenzamine, propranolol or 3-hydroxybenzyloxyamine. … Read more

On the basis of this investigation we made the following observations: 1. The alveolar cell is the metabolically most active cell of the interalveolar septum but the Clara cell is the metabolically most active cell of the peripheral airway system. The Clara cell contains relatively large amounts of firmly bound choline-base phospholipids. The alveolar cell also contains choline-base phospholipids but these are present in a free or loosely-bound form. 2. The oxidative enzyme pattern is the same in serous and mucous cells of the tracheobronchial glands. The production of long-lasting changes in the conductivity of trans-synaptic cortical pathways by homosynaptic and heterosynaptic conditioning procedures has been investigated. Spike responses of single neurones to repetitive submaximal stimulation were recorded with extracellular microelectrodes in the isolated slab preparation of the cat cerveau isolé. Conductivity was defined as the proportion of test stimuli evoking an action potential from the recorded cell. During homosynaptic conditioning the rate of stimulation of the test pathway was changed; during heterosynaptic conditioning the cell was activated by a second, differently placed electrode.
