Different aspects of prostatic carcinoma were studied in the human and in the golden hamster. In human prostatic tissue the LDH isoenzymatic changes were noted to be most reliable for diagnosing malignancy at an LDH V/LDH l ratio of 3.5 and over. The results of the serum studies were of no conclusive diagnostic value. In the golden hamster an SV 40 virus transformed hamster prostatic tumor was noted to possess a controversial resemblance with human prostatic cancer. Shaykh Tabarsi was a Shi'ite scholar, the only Shi'ite theologian of importance in the twelfth century A.D. He produced a commentary on the Qur'an which scholars, both Shi'ite and Sunnite, have acclaimed as the leading work in the field of tafsir. No Western scholar has done any study on Tabarsi or on any of his works. In order to further assess lipid-carbohydrate interactions in familial hyperlipoproteinemia, the acute and chronic effects of glucagon (3 mg i.m.) on plasma total cholesterol, triglycerides, non-esterified fatty acids and glucose were studied in 24 hospitalized patients with primary hyperlipoproteinemia. Glucagon given over 10 days lowered plasma total cholesterol significantly in types III, V, lIa and lIb but neither in II homozygous nor in IV, as compared with the control period (5 days). The thesis aims at studying the growth and systematization of Shi'i usul al-fiqh in the fifth century, A.H. The attempt involves an analysis of the background against which this systematization developed and takes into account the two major works of the period, representing this systematization. The first is al-Dhari'ah of Sharif al-Murtada (d. 436/1044) and the second, 'Uddat al-Usul of Shaykh Abu Ja'far al-Tusi (d. 460/1067). The effects of Ca++ , Na+ , K+ , ouabain, epinephrine and tetrodotoxin (TTX) on the metabolism of glucose-U-C14 in the perfused guinea pig heart were studied. A direct relationship was found between glucose oxidation and the extracellular ratio (Ca++)/(Na+)2. The metabolic stimulatory effects of ouabain were concentration-dependent and were prevented at half and twice Ca++, at zero K+, by MnC12 and by acetate. The addition of malonate, TTX or K+ caused a reduction of the metabolic activity obtained with ouabain, but dichloroisoproterenol and theophylline caused no effect. [...]  Read more

In a strain of Long-Evans rats, central core myofilament dissociation occurred in over 50% of atrial muscle cells (cardiocytes) studied. The major features of this dissociation were: loss of I-bands and Z-lines, loss of sarco-tubules, reduction in size of associated mitochondria, and dissociated aggregates of thick filaments. The thick filaments appeared joined by linear interfilamentary projections which measured about 164 A in length, 40 A in width, and occurred in regular periodic intervals of about 200 A along the filaments. Discrimination of consonant vowel syllables by eight hearing-impaired children was studied. Each child was tested over twelve sessions under each of the following conditions: vision, audition, vision supplemented by optimal audition, and vision supplemented by suboptimal audition. Speech material was presented by videotape and subjects responded by operating a same-different response device. Discrimination was better under bisensory conditions than under either unisensory condition. Vision supplemented by optimal audition was superior to vision supplemented by suboptimal audition.
