The dose-response relation and tolerance pattern of morphine in the formalin test, an animal model of tonic pain, were shown to be similar to those observed clinically in man. Tolerance was negligible and there was a ceiling to amount of analgesia once the acute depressant effects of morphine abate. In contrast, in the tail-flick test marked tolerance was seen in which the dose-response curve was shifted towards higher doses. These differences suggest that the underlying neural mechanisms involved in morphine analgesia in the formalin and tail-flick tests are different. Les sujets étaient 114 élèves anglophones 1e, 2e et 3e années qui participaient à deux programmes d'immersion primaire: un programme entièrement français et un programme français/ hébreu. Four studies were designed to examine the effects of stimulus novelty on looking time, preference, and processing efficiency in hyperactive children. Two control groups were selected; normal children and nonhyperactive poor readers. According to underarousal theories of hyperactivity, the hyperactives should show a unique, heightened attraction to novel stimuli. Novelty was defined in two ways, as incongruity and as unfamiliarity. The responses of all three groups varied systematically as a function of the changes in novelty. Constant strain rate compression and torsion tests were carried out isothermally at temperatures of 875 to 1075(DEGREES)C on a series of six steels. The base steel had a composition of 0.06% C and 1.43% Mn and the others contained one of the following sets of additions: (i) 0.035% Nb; (ii) 0.035% Nb + 0.115% V; (iii) 0.035% Nb + 0.30% Mo; (iv) 0.035% Nb + 1.90% Mn; (v) 0.115% V. The variations of soil mechanical properties, cohesion, c, internal friction angle, (phi), soil-rubber adhesion, c(,r)', soil-steel adhesion, c(,s)', soil-steel friction angle, (delta)(,s), soil-rubber friction angle, (delta)(,r), the sinkage moduli, kc, k(phi), and n, have been studied under field conditions for different soil depths of sandy loam and clay soils. Theoretical equations were developed for calculating the apparent elastic modulus and the strength of corn cob under quasi-static radial compression and simple bending. An empirical equation was derived for calculating its modulus of toughness. Experimental justification was provided for the application of the Hertz linear elastic contact theory in determining cob mechanical properties in radial compression, since the cob is a composite of three inelastic materials. This dissertation analyzes melodrama as a common mode of mid-nineteenth century cultural expression. The dissertation centres on the melodrama in Bulwer Lytton's novels, emphasizing Lytton's use of melodrama as a form of radical social criticism. The first novels expose contemporary social inequities, but employ melodramatic techniques sparingly. Later, Lytton shows complete understanding of the melodramatic method and the 'political' basis of melodrama, resulting in novels such as Paul Clifford and Night and Morning. Cereal aphids started to infest cereals in the first week of June and reached their peak in the second and third week of July. They could affect both the quantity and quality of grain yields, but I recommend chemical control only when the aphid population reaches the economic threshold level, which was calculated as 16 aphids/tiller. Pirimicarb is recommended for chemical control, as it controlled aphids efficiently and had a minimal effect on the available predators and parasites. This is a study of the causes of the failure of the Community Development Program in India. The method used is a sample survey of all family heads in twenty-one villages in a rice producing area in West Bengal, combined with extensive qualitative interviewing of informants, government officials, and other relevant personnel. The study shows that a principal cause of the failure of the program is the steep system of stratification--in terms of economic resources, prestige, and power--that characterizes rural society in this area and the high degree of village fragmentation resulting, in part, from the caste system. The properties of (beta)-N-acetylhexosaminidase (HEX EC 3.2.1.30 and 3.2.1.53) in canine serum during endotoxin induced experimental shock were investigated. In normal canine serum, HEX activity is very low and the enzyme exists in two major isoenzymic forms: a predominant acidic form (HEX A) and a basic form (HEX B). Both HEX A and HEX B as well as a third isoenzyme HEX A('1) are also present in canine tissues. Only HEX A and HEX B are present in the urine. Theoretical studies on the wetting of cylindrical solid surfaces with axisymmetric rugosities explicitly showed the presence of contact angle hysteresis, non-equilibrium jumps during contact line motion and the formation of composite surfaces. For physically rough surfaces with unidirectional randomness it was shown that hysteresis increases with decreasing roughness dimensions and with increasing standard deviation in the solid surface slope distribution. The wetting of solid surfaces by liquids was investigated by a new tensiometric technique called capillarography. Retention of verbal and non-verbal information was assessed in groups of hyperactive, normal and nonhyperactive reading disabled boys matched on age, verbal IQ and socio-economic status. The experimental tasks consisted of a series of verbal and a series of non-verbal measures that were analogous in design. Hyperactive children were comparable to normals in short-term and long-term retention of both verbal and non-verbal stimuli. However, their performance was significantly below that of normal children on tasks requiring effortful mental processing and organization. A general equation was derived for calculating the weight-average molecular weight of the sol fraction, after gelation, of crosslinked copolymers formed by condensation polymerisation; the equation includes those of Flory and Stockmayer as special cases. In qualitative agreement with a gel-degradation model based on the general equation, soluble degradation products from a polymer gel of well defined structure displayed a pattern of increasing molecular weight with increasing solubilisation; it was also observed that the second virial coefficient and the refractive index increment showed a particular form of variation with molecular weight.
