Property ownership and occupational change are used to understand the social and economic organization of the Chinese community in Montreal. These data can be understood with a model of the lineage mode of production, situated within an ethnically defined dual economy. Original immigration data show distinct patterns for Eastern Canada, and the independence of migration from Canadian legislation. The history of Chinese property ownership reveals encapsulated, long term tenure with transfers related to life cycle crises rather than market conditions. Hydrolysis and adsorption-desorption reaction of pyrophosphate (PP) and orthophosphate (OP) were studied in two Quebec soils (St. Bernard and Dalhousie) and three minerals (goethite, kaolinite, and montmorillonite). Soil and soil mineral samples were fractionated by size into two separates. Soil and goethite samples adsorbed more OP than PP whereas kaolinite and montmorillonite adsorbed similar amounts of OP and PP. Pyrophosphate and orthophosphate adsorption was found to be related significantly to extractable Fe. Boltzmann's equation for binary chemical reactions has been solved by the modified moment method using the equivalent of the 13-moment approximations. It was found that the transport coefficients are nonlinear in the thermodynamic forces. This nonlinearity is at least quadratic. The rate coefficient also appears to be at least quadratic in fluxes. The stability of the solutions of two coupled equations of change for the current under the influence of an electric field is examined. The present work represents an attempt to study the inhibition of corrosion of mild steel in acid media by seventeen furan derivatives, at 17 to 30 different inhibitor concentrations, from 0 up to 20 mMole per liter. One of the techniques used to correlate the inhibitive action of organic compounds is based on the Linear Free Energy Relationship (LFER). Leaf and associated soil samples from 15 locations in Quebec showed that grey tobacco contained less N, P, K, Ca, B, nicotine, total alkaloids, organic acids, fatty acids, but more Fe and Al than non-grey (normal) tobacco. Soils producing grey tobacco had less N, Ca, organic matter, a lower cation exchange capacity but more Cl. Fe('55) fed to tobacco plants grown in soil known to produce grey tobacco was translocated to vascular and associated tissue in leaves. Ground hot red pepper mash. With 8% salt was stored ln wooden and plastic container at 22°C for 52°C days and several microbiological and physico-chemical tests were performed on samples taken regularly throughout storage. A fermentation is believed to occur during the first months of storage. This thesis is concerned with problems of current interest in the computer-aided simulation of synchronous machines. It deals with the application of the finite element method in the computation of generator terminal parameters and the simulation of steady-state operation. High, intermediate and low virulent strains of Xanthomonas campestris pv. manihotis were isolated from cassava fields in Nigeria. Resistance to cassava bacterial blight (CBB) increased with age. CBB was established by as little as 10('4) CFU/mL inoculum, but general symptom severity and lesion length differences between resistant, intermediate and susceptible cultivars were greatest with 10('6) CFU/mL and leaf wilting with 10('8) CFU/mL. CBB increased shoot dry weight and foliar ion leakage; this increase was greater for potassium and magnesium than for sodium and calcium. The relationship between organic and mineral components was studied in rat incisor enamel using transmission electron microscopy, freeze-fracture replicas and radioautography. The two categories of matrix proteins were separately visualized. Amelogenins constituted non-structural, heterodispersed material in the intercrystallite space. Several systems, containing up to 10 mol % ionic co-units, were investigated by dynamic mechanical techniques, primarily above the glass transition. The ionic units in quaternized poly(styrene-co-4-vinylpyridine) mildly retard chain diffusion. In contrast, the rubbery plateau of blends of poly(styrene-co-styrene-sulfonic acid) and poly(ethyl acrylate-co-4-vinylpyridine), compatible above ca. 4 mol % co-unit content, is greatly extended, independent of co-unit content. It is postulated that the kinetics of ion dissociation and reassociation in the blends are faster than chain diffusion, effectively trapping chain entanglements for comparatively long times. This investigation was primarily concerned with the interaction of the ('125)I-labeled human gonadotropins with testicular tissue from the human and from nonhuman primate species. The binding of the ('125)I-hFSH and ('125)I-hCG (or ('125)I-hLH) to a particulate fraction (P1) of the primate testis was highly specific. Gonadotropin binding was competitively displaced by the synthetic estrogens and an inhibitory factor present in testicular extracts (140,000 x g supernatant). The biochemical properties of the gonadotropin receptor (testicular) interaction of the different primate species were similar in most respects.
