Cette étude quasi-expérimentale a examiné les effets de deux techniques de rétroaction, reformulations et incitations, sur l'acquisition des verbes réguliers et irréguliers au passé (en anglais) par des apprenants chinois. Les hypothèses de recherche étaient les suivantes : 1) les apprenants qui reçoivent une rétroaction corrective dans le cours d'activités de communication seront plus performants que les membres du groupe témoin qui réalisent seulement les activités de communication ; 2) les incitations auront davantage d'effets bénéfiques que les reformulations dans l'apprentissage de verbes réguliers au passé ; 3) les reformulations seront plus avantageuses pour l'apprentissage de verbes irréguliers au passé. …  Read more

I initially set out to identify the cap structure on the spliced leader RNA of Ciona intestinalis. During this investigation, I discovered a previously unobserved 53 nt transcript containing the spliced leader sequence. This transcript contained the usual metazoan spliced leader RNA cap, trimethylguanosine, while the canonical spliced leader RNA lacked this moiety, but likely contained a mP7PG cap. The cap structure of the trans-spliced troponin I mRNA matched that of the canonical spliced leader RNA, indicating that the canonical spliced leader RNA, not the 53 nt transcript, is the donor for troponin I. The objective of this study was to evaluate the variability of growth curves of dairy heifers and estimate genetic parameters. 15066 records taken from birth until 26 months (808 days) on 2754 heifers of Quebec were considered. The pedigree file comprised 10123 animals. The Mixed procedure of SAS with ordinary polynomials was used for simple phenotypic analyses, fitting fixed linear, quadratic and cubic regressions of body weight (in kilograms) on age (in months) as well as random intercept, and random linear and quadratic regressions for each animal. There is a growing body of evidence that Canadian consumers have concerns about the impact of agricultural production on the health of the environment and on society. This study investigates the preferences of rural and urban consumers in Quebec for food attributes that provide environmental, health, and social benefits. The choice modeling technique was employed to estimate the implicit prices of specific food attributes and willingness to pay (WTP) values for alternative food products. Results suggest that rural consumers place higher value on environmental benefits and have higher social existence values than urban consumers, while urban consumers value health benefits …  Read more

In 2006 a youth health survey was conducted in Pangnirtung, Nunavut as part of a community collaboration. The survey assessed food use, nutrient status and anthropometry. Thirty four percent of youth were above healthy weight; soft drink consumption averaged 1 litre per day; and nutrient intake distributions showed likelihood of inadequacies in the diet. Traditional food (TF) consumption, however, had a beneficial effect on nutrient status as iron, vitamin A and protein intake was significantly higher among those who consumed TF. This thesis provides a review of a computational modeling technique for woodwind-like musical instruments with arbitrarily shaped bore and finger holes. The model of a simple acoustic structure implemented in Matlab is verified through experimental measurements in terms of radiation directivity. The methods of calculating the acoustical impedance at the input end and the internal sound pressure at any position along the principle axis of the bore are presented. The development of efficient strategies towards the formation of carboncarbon (C-C) bonds is of great interest. A common route into C-C bond formation occurs through the coupling between nucleophiles and electrophiles. However, in most cases, these activated coupling partners are often derived from less reactive starting materials. Nous avons voulu explorer la faisabilité d'un vaccin contre le virus des oreillons (VdO) inactivé et administré par voie intra-nasale, et combiné avec l'adjuvant Protollin (Prl). Notre laboratoire a généré et a caractérisé des antigènes de virion entier désintégré utilisant un détergent. Cette étude a été entrepris pour examiner le fonctionnement adaptif chez les enfants ayant des délais développementals dans un contexte d'une intervention précoce. Les gardiens de 60 enfants ayant des délais développementals qui reçoivent des interventions précoces multidisciplinaires ont completés une évaluation standardisée du comportement adaptif de leurs enfants ainsi qu'un questionnaire démographique. Les variables adaptives ont étés analysées parmi 6 catégories diagnostiques pour déterminer si et comment les enfants ayant des délais développementals ont montré des profils adaptifs uniques parmi des contextes d'intervention précoce. The integration of auditory feedback with the vocal motor system, known as audio-vocal integration, is essential for vocal pitch regulation; however, its neural substrate is not well understood. Fiber to the Home (FTTH) has been proven to be an efficient medium for voice, audio, and video transfer. Passive Optical Networks (PONs) are being studied as an upgradeable and low-cost solution to the problem of limited bandwidth in local access networks in the medium of FTTH. In PONs, multiple users share the fiber infrastructure in a pointto- multipoint (P2MP) network topology. This dissertation consists of three chapters. Chapter 1 and 2 apply network formation theory to the study of free trade agreements, and chapter 3 investigates R&D alliance in a network context. The first chapter considers a setting with n countries. These countries are able to negotiate bilateral free trade agreements (FTAs) to form trading networks. A new solution concept, the pairwise farsightedly stable set, is adopted to predict which free trade network may emerge among forward looking countries. Elastic as well as plastic buckling of circular cylindrical shells filled with a core material is analyzed under axial compressive loading. A practical example of this situation is the buckling of concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) columns used widely in high-rise buildings. The theoretical problem is modeled as the bifurcation buckling of a perfect "infinitely" long circular cylindrical shell under uniform compression, constrained by a one-way (tension-less) foundation. Collapse of transmission towers can occur due to accidental loads such as conductor breakages, failures of insulators or other components, either under every day conditions (components with marginal strengths) or under extreme conditions such as ice storms, thunderstorms, tornadoes, fires, explosions, heavy mass impacts, etc. Furthermore, the trigger of one tower collapse may cause a catastrophic cascading failure of the whole transmission line section as was observed in the 1998 ice storm in Quebec, Canada. The neuron-specific K+/Cl- cotransporter 2 (KCC2) is one of the major cation Cl- cotransporter (CCC) proteins in the central nervous system that controls Cl- homeostasis via mediating Cl- extrusion. KCC2 has been established as an essential protein in promoting the maturation of synaptic inhibition during development and controlling neuronal excitibility in the adult central nervous system (CNS). This dissertation charts the emergence of lesbian and gay film festivals in the United States and Canada, their meanings and politics, through the specific discursive contexts in which the festivals are embedded.
