2011 — The role quality of life plays in actvism among people with and without disabilitiesAbstract
The purpose of this study was to determine if levels of reported activism varied between people with and without disabilities, and if quality of life (QOL) played a role in those differences. McGill University students with (n = 49) and without (n = 79) disabilities completed the Activism Orientation Scale (AOS), the Quality of Life Questionnaire, a demographics measure, as well as a measure of political efficacy. Results of independent samples t-tests revealed greater levels of reported traditional activism among people with disabilities relative to those without disabilities. Furthermore, people with disabilities had higher scores on the AOS, as well … Read more

2011 — Persistence of delusion-like beliefs is associated with smaller N400 amplitudes in healthy individualsAbstract
In many patients with schizophrenia, delusions persist despite contradictory information, suggesting that this information is not fully integrated. The smaller N400 event-related brain potentials found in delusional patients confirm this suggestion. Indeed, the N400 amplitude is proportional to the amount of efforts spontaneously deployed by the brain to integrate the meaning of unexpected information. Interestingly, healthy subjects (HSs) with delusional-like ideas (DLIs) also seem to display smaller N400s than HSs without DLIs but only when paranoid feelings are enhanced by a particular induction. Accordingly, a spontaneous active state of paranoia could be responsible for the smaller N400s observed in delusional … Read more

2011 — Characterization of the mechanistic target of rapamycin pathway in the mouse ovaryAbstract
The reproductive disorders in high producing farm animals are mainly due to nutrition-associated problems. While metabolic signals have been shown to affect reproductive processes, it is not clear how such multifactorial signals are integrated at the ovary. The mechanistic target of rapamycin (Mtor) is a highly conserved kinase that acts as a master integrator of signals from growth factors, nutrients, as well as energy and oxygen availability to regulate cell cycle and development. Although in vitro studies have implicated Mtor in the regulation of ovarian granulosa cell function, the in vivo expression pattern and function of Mtor in the ovary … Read more

2011 — Quantitative parameters to evaluate mixing in a single screw extruderAbstract
Mixing is crucial in most polymer processing operations towards obtaining high-quality products (e.g. tubing, tire treads and wire coverings). Material type, screw design, and processing conditions all affect mixing profoundly. Different types of mixing elements have been developed to improve mixing in the single screw extruder; however, the selection of these mixing elements is not trivial. In this work, our purpose is to provide quantitative tools to select the best mixing element. Residence time distribution (RTD) and image analysis were used to compare mixing in three different mixing elements: single flight, Maddox, and Saxton. Residence time distributions were used to … Read more

2011 — Effect of an axial electric field on detonation wavesAbstract
The present thesis reports an investigation of the effects of an axial electric field (200V/cm – 8000V/cm) on the propagation of detonation waves in mixtures of 2CO+O₂ and C₂H₂+O₂+85%Ar. High speed streak camera together with photodiodes was used for detonation velocity and position measurements. Additionally, the voltage across the axial electrodes and the current in the field circuit were also monitored as the detonation traversed the electric field region. The experimental results show that the charged particles within the detonation reaction zone are attracted to the surface of the electrode creating a sheath at the boundary of the electrode that … Read more

2011 — Determination of formaldehyde in ambient air using on-fibre derivatization with solid phase microextraction (SPME)Abstract
Read more

2011 — Measurement of exercise cardiac output in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: comparison of three non-invasive techniquesAbstract
Measurement of exercise cardiac output (Qc) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is limited by the availability of accurate, reliable and practical non-invasive techniques. The purpose of this investigation was to compare three techniques, two of which are lung-diffusion-based (CO2 and Innocor® inert-gas rebreathing) and one using thoracic impedance cardiography (Physioflow®), for exercise Qc determination in 13 COPD patients (Gold II-III) and 11 age-matched controls (CTRL). Measurements were obtained during cycling at 20, 35, 50% peak power. Computation of Qc was based on arterial CaCO2, rate of N2O disappearance (Innocor®) and changes in thoracic impedance (Physioflow®). Test-retest reproducibility in COPD … Read more

2011 — Transcriptional regulation of the Bril geneAbstract
Read more

2011 — Transcriptional regulation of the Bril geneAbstract
Bril is a 134 amino acid-long protein compartmentalized exclusively on the osteoblast cell surface, with two transmembrane domains. Its osteoblast-specific expression coincides with the onset of bone matrix formation and mineralization and has been shown to have an essential role in bone mineralization in vitro, although the mechanism involved is still unknown. The purpose of this study was to characterize the regulation pattern of the Bril gene by identifying the cis-elements on the promoter and the transcription factors that modulate its activation. The promoter for the mouse, rat, and human Bril gene were independently cloned into a luciferase (Luc) reporter … Read more

2011 — Experimental investigation of lunar prototype wheel traction performance on deformable terrainAbstract
Travelling long distances with maximum reliability are necessary requirements for future lunar rover missions. Rovers' mobility performance highly depends on wheel type and the mechanical properties of the terrain on which it is rolling. On the lunar surface, the terrain is primarily composed of very fine grained abrasive particles called regolith. Traditional pneumatic rubber wheels are not a viable option for planetary rovers, due to the unknown properties of rubber over a long term exposure to radiation, and the chances of failure in the near vacuum environment. Therefore, non-pneumatic non-rubber compliant wheels have been recognized as a best possible option … Read more

2011 — Theory of non-equilibrium vertex correctionAbstract
For realistic nanostructures, there are inevitably some degree ofdisorder such as impurity atoms, imperfect lattices, surfaceroughness, etc.. For situations where disorder locate randomly inthe nanostructure, any calculated quantum transport results shouldbe averaged over disorder distributions. A brute force approach isto generate many disorder configurations, calculate each of them, and then average the results. For atomistic first principlesmodeling, such a brute force averaging is computationallyprohibitive - if not impossible, to perform. It is therefore veryimportant and useful to develop a theoretical framework where thedisorder averaging is done analytically before atomic firstprinciples analysis is carried out.In this thesis, we have developed such a … Read more

2011 — Putative biomarkers of tamoxifen response in breast cancerAbstract
Several molecular factors have been associated with the sensitivity of breast cancer to tamoxifen (T): Pax2 can mediate the repression of ERBB2 expression by the tamoxifen-ER complex; TC21 is a member of the Ras superfamily associated with increased recurrence in tamoxifen-treated patients; CCND1 (Cyclin D1) is frequently amplified in breast cancers resistant to this drug; and RSF1 is often co-amplified with CCND1 on chromosome 11q. Here, validation of the predictive value of these biomarkers is explored in the MA.12 trial, in which premenopausal women with node-positive/high-risk node-negative early breast cancer, of any hormonal status, were randomized to T (20 mg/day) … Read more

2011 — Tree encoding in the ITU-T G.711.1 speech coderAbstract
Read more

Read more

2011 — Sensory substitution learning using auditory input: Behavioral and neural correlatesAbstract
Sensory substitution refers to the replacement of one sensory input with another. This concept, originally developed to aid the blind, presents a scientific opportunity to study crossmodal perceptual learning and neural plasticity. Using a technique that translates vision into sound, the present dissertation examined sensory substitution learning. Four studies tested the hypotheses that mental representations of spatial information such as shape are abstract, and that they are based on involvement of common brain regions independently of sensory modality. Study 1 aimed to develop a training paradigm in auditory vision substitution. We examined the minimum amount of learning necessary to identify … Read more

This dissertation investigates the impact of globalization on educational policy and contemporary social life in Korea. Using bricolage, a qualitative research methodology that encompasses multiple critical social theories, I interrogate the notion of globalization and its practices. I examine current English pedagogy as well as cultural practices that exist in Korean society from a critical hermeneutical stance. Within the policy goal of achieving globalization, competence in English is excessively promoted in Korea, being considered the dominant global method of communication. However, far from its goal to raise global citizens or leaders through English education, Korean English pedagogy neglects or ignores … Read more

Higgs bosons are present in many extensions of the Standard Model, yet we are still waiting for the experimental confirmation of their existence. This thesis discusses Minimal and Next-to Minimal Supersymmetric Models, and presents searches for leptonic Higgs boson decays in channels that may provide the first unambiguous evidence of Higgs physics beyond the Standard Model. The channels considered are1 : gg→a1, gg→h1→2a1, H+→τν, and H+→a1W+, where a1→µµ and τ→ℓνν . A full data analysis is presented for gg→a1→µµ channel, while sensitivity prospects are discussed for the other channels. For the data analysis, we consider a data set with an … Read more

2011 — Statics and dynamics of DNA in a network of nanofluidic entropic trapsAbstract
A nanofluidic slit embedded with a lattice of square pits was used to entropically trap polymers. DNA in the system was confined to two dimensions and underwent self-assembly into discrete conformational states based on the number of occupied pits. The molecules diffused by undergoing transitions to higher or lower pit-occupancy states and relaxing to their equilibrium state. A statistical mechanical model was used to predict the mean occupancy state as a function of various geometric parameters. Experiments confirm many of the predictions of the model. Regions of parameter space over which a single state dominates were observed, indicating that entropic … Read more

2011 — Enhancing speech coder quality: improved noise estimation for postfiltersAbstract
ITU-T G.711.1 is a multirate wideband extension for the well-known ITU-T G.711 pulse code modulation of voice frequencies. The extended system is fully interoperable with the legacy narrowband one. In the case where the legacy G.711 is used to code a speech signal and G.711.1 is used to decode it, quantization noise may be audible. For this situation, the standard proposes an optional postfilter. The application of postfiltering requires an estimation of the quantization noise. The more accurate the estimate of the quantization noise is, the better the performance of the postfilter can be.In this thesis, we propose an improved … Read more

2011 — Interrelationship between tetherin-mediated restriction and its Vpu-mediated antagonism in HIV-1 cell-to-cell spread and the potential to develop Vpu as an antiviral targetAbstract
This doctoral thesis comprises three parts. The first two parts (Chapter 2 and 3) define the role of the host cell restriction factor tetherin in restriction of HIV-1 cell-to-cell spread. These chapters also characterize the tetherin-inducible cell line Sup-T1 that was used in Chapter 4 to investigate whether the antiviral activity of protease inhibitors might partially be attributed to tetherin modulation. Tetherin is an intrinsic host cell restriction factor that inhibits virus release by linking the viral membrane of the budding virus to the cellular membrane. The antiviral activity of tetherin has been commonly attributed to its cell surface expression. … Read more
