2011 — The onset of detonation downstream of perforated plates
    Abstract

In the present research, the onset of detonation downstream of a perforated plate subsequent to the reflection of a Chapman-Jouguet (CJ) detonation upstream was investigated. Single-frame schlieren photography was used together with pressure and velocity measurements to examine the phenomena in detail. Experiments were performed with two different mixtures: C2H2 + 2.5O2 + 70%Ar and C3H8 + 5O2. The former is known to have a piecewise laminar structure with a regular cellular structure while the latter has a much more irregular transverse wave pattern. Upon reflection of the CJ detonation upstream, a turbulent reaction front propagates downstream at a quasi-steady …  Read more

2011 — Reach amplitude may be encoded in the posterior parietal cortex: preliminary findings
    Abstract

Areas of the brain that encode activity important to an arm reach have been investigated for their potential use in motor neuroprosthetic devices for amputees and paralyzed patients. The components pertinent to an accurate arm reach are the direction and distance (hereto after referred to as amplitude) of the target and the action value based on reward. Although much information exists on the neural correlates of both reward and direction, little is known about where the brain encodes the amplitude of an upcoming reach. Furthermore, researchers have debated whether direction and amplitude are encoded separately or together in reach centers …  Read more

2011 — Morphologic and molecular investgations of pulmonary branching in fetal lung explants from the nitrofen-rat model of congenital diaphragmatic hernia with or without tracheal occlusion
    Abstract

Fetal tracheal occlusion (TO) has been investigated as a treatment option for lung hypoplasia secondary to congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). TO has been shown to accelerate lung growth but its effect on bronchial branching is unknown. In this study we characterized the effects of in vitro TO on bronchial branch development in fetal lung explants derived from the Nitrofen rat model of CDH and on the expression of four molecular markers involved in lung development (FGF10, SHH, VEGF, LGL1). Nitrofen administration induced lung hypoplasia as shown by decreased airway branching in fetal lung explants and decreased expression of FGF10. TO …  Read more

2011 — Finite element simulation of debonding of face/core interface in a circular sandwich plate under impact
    Abstract

Read more

2011 — Kinetic and mass-spectroscopic studies of atmospherically relevant mercury-bromine chemistry
    Abstract

Bromine radicals are thought to play an important role in the chemistry of atmospheric elemental mercury, however uncertainties remain concerning the rate and the mechanism of the reaction. The products of the atmospheric reaction are thought to be mercury halides of the form HgBrX, where X = Cl, Br, I. This thesis describes the early stages of development of a methodology for the detection of atmospheric mercury halides by Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (APCI-MS). It also reports the results of laboratory experiments aimed at identifying the product(s) and determining the rate coefficient of the reaction at near atmospheric …  Read more

    2011 — A study of graphene hydrogenation
    Abstract

Graphene on SiC has been exposed to thermally cracked hydrogen in an HV environment. Methylene groups ($CH_2$) were observed by IR spectroscopy at a density one hundred times that of lone C-H. Graphene on SiC was also studied using magnetotransport. Weak localization was observed in accordance with theory and scattering times were measured. Exfoliated graphene was prepared on oxide surfaces for controlled gas exposure experiments with graphene FETs. The impact of substrate hydrophobicity on charge transfer with adsorbates was quantitatively measured. Graphene FETs were also produced from graphene grown on copper by chemical vapor deposition and weak localisation measurements were …  Read more

2011 — Student outcomes in inquiry instruction
    Abstract

A literature review of student outcomes from inquiry instruction generated a list of 23 criterion-referenced student outcomes. These included more commonly addressed outcomes such as content knowledge and process skills, and less commonly addressed outcomes such as creativity, motivation, collaborative ability, and autonomy. This list was adapted into a questionnaire probing to what extent the various outcomes were perceived in classrooms by teachers working at varying self-rated levels of inquiry use (low, middle, high). Analyses were performed on a sample of 74. Teachers' self-ratings of inquiry use were significantly and positively related to the inquiry outcomes categorized as learning competencies …  Read more

2011 — Characterization of alternative splicing and gene fusions using current transcriptome profiling technologies
    Abstract

The study of the transcriptome, which consists of all RNA molecules in a cell, has been important for elucidating the underlying mechanisms involved in the regulation and expression of genes. Here we describe two studies that apply current high-throughput techniques to investigate two genetic phenomena at the transcriptome level in humans: alternative splicing using whole-transcript gene expression microarrays, and gene fusions using massively parallel transcriptome sequencing (RNA-Seq). Alternative splicing is a post-transcriptional mechanism that allows for the production of multiple transcript isoforms of the same gene, resulting in increased transcriptome diversity. Recently, the global analysis of AS has been facilitated …  Read more

2011 — Into the hourglass: a teacher's retrospective study of a process-drama approach to Greek tragedy
    Abstract

Researchers are asking what drama teachers do in the classroom that promotes effective learning. Educational drama practitioner researchers O'Neill (1995) and Taylor (2006) suggest that theory informs practice and practice informs theory. This qualitative retrospective study examines a teacher's and students' reflections on a process-drama approach to Greek tragedy. Drawing on Schon's (1983, 1987) theory of reflective practice, my study examines my "reflections-in-action" with five secondary 5 adolescent students between 1997 and 2004, and "reflections-on-action" with the same adult students between 2009 and 2010. An hourglass serves as a visual metaphor for reflection on three phases of the learning process: …  Read more

Read more

…  Read more

For the social sciences and humanities, however, nuch of this concern is not substantiated with any actual data. This thesis examines five of these proposed theses (or "fears") and finds that only one can be supported by actual evidence. The remaining four concerns are thus premature or erroneous. The first thesis centers around total dollar funding amounts and argues that federal funding is either dwindling for the social sciences and humanities or has …  Read more

Obtaining a deeper understanding of the processes that occur in elastomers during stress relaxation has been identified as a problem of great scientific importance. To this end, stress-strain measurements have been performed in situ with X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements. Here, we develop a mechanism for carrying out these measurements in a compressional strain configuration and compare these results with those in an extensional strain configuration. Measurements of the tensile relaxation moduli of polychloroprene (neoprene) and nitrile butadiene rubber (buna-N) elastomers are performed and analysed. Three techniques of data analysis are employed and contrasted: the standard linear solid model (SLSM), …  Read more

2011 — The effect of namH disruption in Mycobacterium tuberculosis on the pathogenesis of experimental tuberculosis
    Abstract

Peptidoglycan-derived muramyl dipeptide (MDP) activates the host immune response through the NOD2 receptor. Mycobacteria produce an unusual, glycolylated form of MDP, through the action of the enzyme N-acetyl muramic acid hydroxylase (NamH), that is more potent and more efficacious at inducing NOD2-mediated host responses. We set out to test the importance of this modification in M. tuberculosis by disrupting the namH gene (Rv3818). An allelic exchange strategy using a thermosensitive sacB-containing vector was used to create M. tuberculosis ∆namH strain which was confirmed by Southern blot and then complemented with an integrative plasmid. HPLC analysis revealed the namH knockout was …  Read more

The Bcl2 family proteins are central regulators of apoptosis; the primary form of physiological cell death. Furthermore, inappropriate activation or silencing of Bcl2 family members has been associated with cancer development and treatment resistance. These proteins therefore represent attractive therapeutic targets, and, in consequence, an increased understanding of the roles played by Bcl2 proteins will be important for the development and implementation of targeted therapies. Although best characterized with respect to their role at the mitochondria, it is now evident that Bcl2 proteins also function at the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). 2011 — Tracking cues from early life environment to effects on gene expression
    Abstract

The early life environment is an important influence on development in all mammalian species. The consequence of exposure to certain key, chronic environmental stimuli is the programming of gene expression to influence the development of a phenotype that is adaptive to the prevailing environment, a phenomenon described as phenotypic plasticity. One example of such environmental programming is the lifelong increase in hippocampal glucocorticoid receptor (GR) expression observed in rats that are reared by high compared to low licking/grooming (LG) mothers. For such an effect to occur, information from the environment must be transduced into signals that reach specific genomic sites. …  Read more

A major goal of our lab and of this thesis is to reveal the intracellular mechanisms controlling FSH synthesis. The expression of the FSHβ subunit gene (Fshb) is rate-limiting in production of the mature dimeric hormone and is regulated by numerous endocrine hormones and paracrine acting factors, including gonadotropin-releasing hormone, sex steroids, and transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) superfamily ligands such as activins. Energy detection has emerged as a prime technique for wideband spectrum sensing in cognitive radio applications. Much of the present research in the area of energy detection assumes that the occupancy of any particular frequency subband is independent of the occupancy of other subbands. However, in practice, subband occupancy is likely to be correlated, for instance, due to the use of wideband transmission signals by existing users, such as broadcast television. Incorporation of the prior knowledge of such correlation into the design of channel occupancy detectors can substantially enhance the wideband sensing performance. In this thesis, we focus on the wideband …  Read more

2011 — Defining the role of Quaking RNA binding protein and arginine methyltransferase PRMT5 in myelination
    Abstract

Read more

2011 — The role of Dock180 in ErbB2-mediated breast cancer tumorigenesis and metastasis
    Abstract

Read more

2011 — Prevalence and correlates of food insecurity in Inuit communities
    Abstract

Read more

    Abstract

This thesis aims at analysing how Nancy Huston's La virevolte (1994) and Prodige (1999) approach the reconciliation between creation and procreation. For a long time, women were reduced to their power of reproduction and kept away from creation. By taking possession of their own female bodies, by redefining maternity away from the control of patriarchy and by recognising mutuality between mother and daughter, women can now embody the mother, the woman and the artist roles. The use of feminist literary criticism, of works on maternity and of theories of enunciation will allow us to set forth the female characters' maternal …  Read more
