2013 — Semi automation of mean axis of rotation (MAR) analysis
    Abstract

The Mean Axis of Rotation (MAR) Analysis is an analysis procedure used to diagnose problems in the cervical spine. Researchers have shown that many patient symptoms can be correlated to abnormal MAR placement [1], making MAR analysis an important tool in medical diagnosis. However, the current method of calculating the MAR for a single patient is manual, and very labour intensive, thus rendering it impractical to use MAR Analysis in a general clinical setting. This work presents a computer vision based tool which performs the MAR Analysis in a semi-automatic manner, greatly reducing the effort required by the manual procedure. …  Read more

    2013 — Spectrally-efficient approaches to channel estimation for amplify-and-forward two-way relay networks
    Abstract

Relay networks constitute one of the key technologies that are being developed for use in next generation wireless systems. In relay networks, the communication between the source and the destination is aided by dedicated nodes (relays) that convey the source's message to the destination. The use of relays improves the coverage, capacity and reliability in the network. Two-way relay networks (TWRNs) have recently been proposed to support bidirectional communication and have attracted the attention of many researchers because of their high spectral efficiency. In particular, TWRNs employing the amplify-and-forward (AF) protocol are appealing because of the minimal processing requirements at …  Read more

2013 — Geotechnical risk assessment of mine haulage drifts during the life of a mine plan
    Abstract

Mine developments such as haulage drifts and cross-cuts are the primary access to the mining blocks of an orebody in multilevel mining systems for tabular ore deposits. Thus, their stability is of utmost importance during the planned period of production or the life of a mine plan. Many Canadian underground mines use longitudinal and transverse stoping with delayed backfill to extract tabular ore deposits. These methods require access to the orebody through a number of sill drives or cross-cuts which link the orezone to the haulage drift hence creating intersections on multiple levels. Mine development instability could lead to serious …  Read more

2013 — Linear oscillatory dynamics of flexoelectric membranes embedded in viscoelastic media with applications to outer hair cells
    Abstract

Membrane flexoelectricity is an electromechanical coupling effect between the membrane average curvature and macroscopic electric polarization. Flexolelectricity is a biological actuation mechanism involved in the functioning of hearing. This thesis uses theory and simulation to develop a fundamental understanding of flexolectricity of relevance to hearing processes by integrating membrane elasticity and flexolectricity with viscoelastic processes. Flexoelectric actuation uses an imposed electric field to create membrane bending. In this thesis we model the small amplitude oscillatory dynamics of a membrane immersed in viscoelastic media driven by a small amplitude harmonic electric field. The model is based on the integration of the …  Read more

2013 — Community detection in dynamic networks
    Abstract

A reasonable representation of some complex systems such as social and biological systems is a network topology that allows its components and interactions among them to change over time. Understanding the time-dependence of these networks can lead to invaluable insight about characteristics and structure of time-varying networks. In this thesis, several classes of static and dynamic clustering algorithms and ideas are reviewed. A challenge arising in dynamic clustering schemes is that the detected communities are not independent over time and the identified clusters at one point of time should not dramatically deviate from the results of previous timesteps. It is …  Read more

In this thesis, we solve this classic real enumeration problem using two different techniques. One method is group theoretic, and the other uses characteristic classes. Part of our goal is to show how these methods are related to each other as well as to the classical results. In particular, we give …  Read more

2013 — The measurement of the linear energy transfer of various radiotherapeutic beams in the clinic: a feasibility study
    Abstract

Beam quality specification is essential in accurate characterization of radiotherapeutic beams. Amongst the many beam quality parameters that have been defined and applied, the linear energy transfer (LET) is one of the few parameters that provide an insight into the radiobiological effects of radiation. In this work, we investigated the feasibility of establishing a beam quality detector that allows for the indirect measurement of LET in the clinic. Intrinsic energy dependence was induced in an Exradin A12 ionization chamber by replacing its chamber wall with geometrically identical yet material varying walls. The energy response of these detectors was characterized by …  Read more

2013 — Novel role for αNAC as a scaffold protein that differentially recruits HDAC-containing corepressor complexes for the repression of Integrin-B6
    Abstract

The nascent-polypeptide-associated complex and coactivator-alpha (αNAC) is a subunit of a cytosolic heterodimer that binds to ribosomes and newly synthesized polypeptides in a chaperone-like manner. In the nucleus, αNAC acts as a transcriptional coregulator that can potentiate the expression of the osteoblast-specific gene, Osteocalcin (Ocn). One unique feature of αNAC is its sequence-specific DNA binding capacity. By virtue of this unique characteristic, ChIP-chIP technology was used to identify potential target genes of αNAC in mineralizing osteoblasts. One target that emerged from this analysis was Itgβ6. To confirm the result obtained by ChIP-chIP, we performed a formaldehyde cross-linking ChIP in pre-osteoblastic …  Read more

2013 — Dimer-dependent allosteric modulation within GPCR signalling complexes can influence signalling diversity

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) comprise the largest group of cell surface receptors, translating environmental signals into cellular responses via cognate G protein partners. Contrary to our initial understanding, most GPCRs do not function in living cells as monomers, but most likely dimers, or even larger arrays of receptors. Standard drug design approaches rely on the notion that drugs binding the two receptors in a given dimer likely function independently of one another. However, this view has been challenged by recent work showing that ligand binding at both receptors can modulate dimeric receptors via allosteric communication. While one receptor may actually …  Read more

Bone resorption and bone-implant interface instability are two bottlenecks of current orthopaedic hip implant designs. Bone resorption is often triggered by mechanical bio-incompatibility of the implant with the surrounding bone. It has serious clinical consequences in both primary and revision surgery of hip replacements. After primary surgery, bone resorption can cause periprosthetic fractures, leading to implant loosening. For the revision surgery, the loss of bone stock compromises the ability of bone to adequately fix the implant. Interface instability, on the other hand, occurs as a result of excessive micromotion and stress at the bone-implant interface, which prevents implant fixation. As …  Read more

Read more
