2016 — Effect of induced acute metabolic alkalosis by sodium bicarbonate administration on exercise ventilatory efficiency in healthy adults
    Abstract

Read more

2016 — The paranomastic infinitive in the creation story: translating in the Yahwist
    Abstract

Read more

2016 — The economic efficiency of secured transactions: a comparative analysis
    Abstract

Countries worldwide are becoming increasingly aware of the existing relationship between the economy and the regulatory environment. The pressure exercised by International Organizations, Financial Institutions and Multinational Corporations is spurring this awareness continuously. Lawmakers across the globe are moulding key areas of their legal systems to get an alleged competitive boost on the international economic markets. One of these key areas is secured transactions. According to the studies conducted by prominent economists, by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and by the World Bank (WB), access to credit …  Read more

2016 — Visual and presaccadic activity in Area 8A of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in macaque monkeys
    Abstract

Read more

2016 — Gender and the human dimensions of climate change: global discourse and local perspectives from the Canadian Arctic
    Abstract

Climate change impacts will be mediated by gender. This thesis examines climate change and gender at both a global and local scale. Globally, as recognition of the role gender plays in one's climate change experience grows, so too does concern that engagement with concepts of gender has been tokenistic. In response, this thesis begins by examining to what extent climate change adaptation, vulnerability and resilience literature engages with concepts of gender, by developing an assessment framework. This systematic literature review finds that while high, medium, and low levels of engagement are relatively equal, there is great disparity in the literature …  Read more

2016 — Performance of the EarthCARE cloud profiling radar in marine stratus clouds
    Abstract

Read more

    Abstract

Read more

2016 — Poetics of silence: Hongzhi Zhengjue (1091-1157) and the practice of poetry in Song Dynasty Chan Yulu
    Abstract

Read more

    Abstract

Read more

2016 — A study of large fringe and non-fringe subtrees in conditional galton-watson trees
    Abstract

Data were collected from face-to-face interviews conducted with participants, three other involved stakeholders, and from my own reflective memos. The study was guided by the three main research questions: How do they describe their educational experiences? What are the highlights and/or challenges of having been in their schools? How do they describe the process of integrating into a new society? Constant comparison analysis of participants' interviews revealed three major themes, each comprising categories that ran through the data. Under the …  Read more

2016 — Perceptual combination of binocular luminance and orientation
    Abstract

This thesis contains two projects. Project one was inspired, in part, by findings by Baker and Graf (2009). Baker and Graf (2009) found that decreasing the difference in orientation between dichoptic gratings shown to each eye, increased the length of binocular rivalry dominance durations and increased masking thresholds during dichoptic masking. They also found significant individual differences in masking threshold and rivalry rate and that those individuals with the slowest rivalry also had the strongest masking. We set out to replicate these findings with a few novel modifications. When we examined the effects of changing the orientation difference between stimuli …  Read more

2016 — Characterization and validation of MGMT-binding partners using a proteomic-based approach in glioblastoma
    Abstract

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common primary malignant brain tumor in adults and is one of the most lethal human cancers. This is due to its highly vascularized and invasive nature, which makes complete surgical resection and treatment difficult. O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT), a DNA repair protein ubiquitously expressed in normal human tissues, plays a vital role in protection against alkylating agents used in GBM treatment. While MGMT is known to exert its DNA repair function (alkyl transfer) independently of other proteins, increasing evidence suggests a role of MGMT as an ancillary protein mediating additional functions through interactions with binding partners …  Read more

2016 — Analysis and code generation for multicore fault tolerant mixed criticality embedded systems
    Abstract

Safety critical embedded systems often require redundant hardware to guarantee correct operation. Typically, in the automotive domain, redundancy is implemented using a pair of cores executing in lockstep to achieve dual modular redundancy. Lockstep execution, however, has been shown in theory to be less efficient than alternative redundancy schemes such as on-demand redundancy, where redundancy is achieved by replicating threads in a multicore system. In this thesis, an analysis and code generation framework is presented which automates the porting of Simulink generated code to a previously implemented multicore architecture supporting ODR with fingerprinting hardware to detect errors. The framework consists of …  Read more

Early behavioural intervention in children with ASD has been shown to improve their acquisition of language and play skills, as well as their overall social behaviour. While ASD can be diagnosed clinically after children are 3 years old, the development of biomarkers to help in earlier diagnosis will facilitate earlier intervention and may lead to better outcomes. Longitudinal studies using anatomical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be powerful to help understand …  Read more

2016 — The regulation of skin immunity by CD109 with relevance to psoriatic-like inflammation
    Abstract

Mammalian skin contains a complex network of immune and stromal cell types that serve an indispensable role in host defense against environmental insults and invasion by pathogenic microorganisms. In contrast, aberrant cutaneous immune responses may provoke the development of unwanted skin inflammation and disease. One of the most common inflammatory skin disorders, Psoriasis, is driven by interleukin (IL)-17-producing T lymphocytes. Specifically, a subset of innate-like gamma delta(gd) T cells resident to the dermis that produce high levels of IL-17 (gd17 cells) have recently been implicated in the progression of psoriatic disease. However, the pathways that regulate gd17 cells have not …  Read more

Second, we study silicon photonic devices for passive all-optical signal processing and active optical signal modulation enabling dense integration of photonics with advanced microelectronics. Finally, we address the need for faster short-reach transceivers in intra- and inter-data center networks by proposing novel modulation formats, digital signal processing algorithms, and transceiver architectures for Stokes vector modulation and demodulation. The thesis covers a large range of optical transmission distances, from long-haul to chip-scale photonics …  Read more

Products can be manufactured layer by layer directly from 3D model data. It is not always easy for manufacturing engineers to choose proper BJ process parameters to meet the end-product quality and fabrication time requirements. This is because the quality properties of the products fabricated by the BJ process are significantly affected by the process parameters. The relationships between process parameters and quality properties are also very complicated. It is because the BJ AM process involves many different disciplines and …  Read more

A previous psychophysical experiment found a monocular color vision mechanism, revealed at low spatial frequencies, that lacks orientation tuning and may act as a surface color or ‘blob' detector. However, monocular color vision at mid spatial frequencies and achromatic vision both displayed orientation tuning, and are therefore capable of form processing. …  Read more
