2019 — Artificial neural networks for analysis of coherent X-ray diffraction images
    Abstract

Read more

2019 — The effects of differential diffusion in counter-flow premixed flames with dilution and enrichment
    Abstract

The continued combustion of fossil fuels to fulfill global energy demand is being questioned because of the well-known problem of greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions, which introduces new carbon, in the form of carbon dioxide, into the environment causing climate change. However, the inherent advantages of combustion-based engines, e.g., energy and power densities, make it hard for other power systems to compete; hence, a leading strategy is to avoid burning fossil fuels by using alternative renewable fuels, such as hydrogen and renewable biofuels. Adaptability with alternative renewable fuels that have variable compositions is referred to as fuel flexibility, which is an important …  Read more

2019 — New insights into molecular mechanisms regulatiing oocyte development
    Abstract

Read more

2019 — A defense in depth approach for software as a service cloud applications
    Abstract

Cloud based deployments have been moving towards a positive trend over the past decade. A variety of tooling has been introduced and the deployment procedure itself has been immensely eased. Thus, many large scale businesses are considering a move towards a fully cloud based solution. This enables them to take complete advantage of the data intensive computing facilities of the cloud. Nevertheless, the decision to move towards a complete cloud-deployment does pose some important concerns; the top priority concern being data security. The current service-levels (in terms of data security) provided by the cloud providers are proven to be strong. …  Read more

2019 — Jabal Āmil: The production of space in an Islamicate context from the birth of Islam to the nineteenth century
    Abstract

Where is Jabal ʿĀmil? What is Jabal ʿĀmil? Though today Jabal ʿĀmil is widely considered to be the folk name for what is now called "South Lebanon," this dissertation answers these questions by examining the history of the idea of Jabal ʿĀmil as an instance of the production of space in an Islamicate context. To examine how Jabal ʿĀmil was produced as a space by various authors operating within and outside of a self-identifying ʿĀmilī-Shiʿi historiography, the period under consideration spans the dawn of Islam through to the nineteenth century. This analysis begins by looking at the first associations of …  Read more

The use of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) in gynecologic oncology has been limited despite an exponential growth in some other specialties. Technological advances in the field of robotics may facilitate the application of MIS, thereby allowing more patients to benefit from the less invasive procedure. Despite the rising popularity of robotic surgery, questions remain as to its clinical and cost-effectiveness, contributing to resistance to changes in clinical practice and thus impeding its growth. The objective of the current thesis was to evaluate the clinical and financial outcomes, from the perspective of patients and of the hospital, following the introduction of a …  Read more

    Abstract

Read more

2019 — Ultrafast mid-infrared pulse generation and characterization in chalcogenide microwires
    Abstract

Mid-infrared (IR) wavelength range (2–12 μm), encompassing numerous molecular fingerprintswith strong fundamental vibrational transitions, is tremendously important for variousspectroscopy applications. Currently, commercially available mid-IR sources are mostly basedon semiconductor or gas gain media, nonlinear wavelength conversion in bulk nonlinear crystals, and rare-earth doped fluoride fibers. Generally, fiber lasers have the advantages of highefficiency, compactness, superior reliability, and excellent beam quality. Commercially availablemid-IR fiber lasers are mostly based on silica or fluoride fibers. However, transmissionwindows of silica and fluoride glasses are limited to 2.5 μm and 5.5 μm, respectively, and emissionfrom rare-earth dopants can only cover a small portion of the mid-IR …  Read more

2019 — Non-destructive assessment of chicken egg fertility using hyperspectral imaging technique
    Abstract

The Canadian chicken industry is a huge one with about 2,836 regulated producers spread across the provinces producing, and of which 61% of production originated from Quebec and Ontario. According to the Agriculture and Agri-food Canada report 2017, total hatching egg set (for both egg production chicks and broilers) was over 1.0 billion. With fertility rate observed in the year 2017 to be around 82%, there were about 180 million unhatched eggs incubated in Canada for year 2017 alone. This meant a whooping sum of at least 311 million Canadian dollars was wasted by the hatchery industries towards incubating unhatched …  Read more

2019 — Alternative realities: negotiating urban space production in the small town of Cao Bang City, upland northern Vietnam
    Abstract

Urban growth is a highly relevant challenge to development in the northern Vietnamese uplands. In this region, state and private enterprises are dramatically transforming rural landscapes for natural resource exploitation and 'development' potential. As a result, the region's small cities are steadily growing in population as lowland migrants are attracted by new employment opportunities. Despite such rapid urbanization occurring in northern Vietnam, there is little written on the dynamics of urban space use in the region's small upland cities. This research project seeks to fill the gap in the literature concerning urbanization dynamics in small upland cities in Vietnam. The …  Read more

Read more

    Abstract

Turbulent mixing, which leads to dilution or chemical reactions (including combustion) at a molecular level, is studied using a passive scalar. Khorsandi (2013) and Perez-Alvarado (2016) studied the velocity and concentration fields of an axisymmetric turbulent jet in zero mean flow, respectively, in a quiescent and turbulent ambient. The aim of the present study is to extend this work observing a turbulent jet released into a nearly homogeneous isotropic turbulent background with negligible mean flow created with a random jet array. The characteristic of the jet in a turbulent background flow is compared to that released into a quiescent background. …  Read more

2019 — Time domain numerical modelling of graphene
    Abstract

Read more

2019 — Nonlinear thermoelastic damping in Euler-Bernoulli beams
    Abstract

Read more

2019 — Investigating the physiological role of chloride permeation through excitatory amino acid transporter 1 (EAAT1)
    Abstract

Read more

Read more

Removable partial dentures (RPDs) provide cost-effective treatment for millions of partially edentulous patients worldwide. However, RPDs often present several complications that result in treatment failure and patient dissatisfaction. The main reasons for these problems are the inadequate quality of the RPD framework and the lack of precise guidelines for designing retentive RPDs. We hypothesized that laser sintering/melting technology and advanced algorithms can improve the quality and design of removable partial denture treatments. Accordingly, the aim of this thesis is to optimize the quality and the design of removable partial dentures by using digital technology. Read more

2019 — Human sperm DNA damage: Impact of «in vitro» oxidative stress and «in vivo» vitamins on conventional and advanced sperm function parameters
    Abstract

Introduction: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress (OS) play a major role in sperm DNA damage which may adversely affect fertilisation and embryo development. ROS induces sperm DNA damage and impairs sperm motility via multiple mechanisms (lipid peroxidation process, initiation of apoptosis, and DNA oxidation). Oral antioxidants may have a favorable effect in decreasing ROS and protecting the sperm against DNA damage. However, a physiologic balance between oxidation and reduction is vital for sperm function. Material & methods: For in vitro OS study, we performed a prospective study of 10 fertile donors at McGill University Health Center in Montreal. …  Read more

Read more

Cyclic depsipeptides, ubiquitous natural products of industrial and medical importance, are produced by nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPS) using a diverse repertoire of biosynthetic mechanisms. For instance, cereulide (Ces) and valinomycin (Vlm) depsipeptide synthetases generate a linear precursor by the alternate condensation of hydroxy and amino acids. Hydroxy acids are added by specialized modules consisting of adenylation (A), ketoreductase (KR) and peptidyl carrier protein (PCP) domains, while an iterative thioesterase (TE) domain catalyzes the oligomerization/cyclization of the linear precursor to release the mature product. In order to perform a biochemical characterization of the specialized modules that add hydroxy acids in the Ces …  Read more
