2024 — The voids of speculation: ghosts and asynchronies in the new urban areas of Hanoi, Vietnam
    Abstract

Read more

2024 — Engaged encounters: The role of critical pedagogy and impact on racialized students in cultural studies
    Abstract

When identity, history, and culture converge, the university classroom is not only confronted by uneven power relationships, but it also functions as a space of possibility and transformation. A major challenge of higher education in Canada is the systemic influence of capitalism, patriarchy, colonialism, and racism on everyday experiences of both faculty members and students. However, engaged, critical pedagogy has the potential to disrupt these norms and impact the life trajectory of students. This research study explored the university classroom as a space for resisting dominant ideologies and institutionally privileged voices in Cultural Studies. This study investigated how Cultural Studies …  Read more

2024 — Delineate the extent of trophoblastic differentiation in hydatidiform moles and their malignancies
    Abstract

Read more

2024 — SPACE DEBRIS AND PRIVATE ACTIVITIES: Can a Private Operator Change its Licence to Reduce its Obligation to Mitigate Space Debris?
    Abstract

Read more

2024 — T cell antigen specificity in infection and autoimmunity: insights from computational modelling
    Abstract

T cells form an indispensable component of vertebrate immune function. The primary goal of effector T cells is to recognize and respond to invading threats in a highly pathogen-specific manner, while remaining tolerant toward the cells and tissues that constitute ``self''. Regulatory T cells, on the other hand, are a class of immunosuppressive cells that react to self with an important goal of preventing autoimmune responses. In both cases, these T cells need to be able to ``see’’ the foreign- or self-antigen that they are specific for, respectively, in order to exert their function in an antigen-specific manner. This exquisite …  Read more

2024 — The current status of hybrid learning platforms for allophones within the province of Québec: A critical analysis of policies aimed at generating economic stability for recent immigrants in Québec
    Abstract

This paper will investigate issues that immigrants in Québec navigate when learning either French or English within the current educational infrastructure provided by the provincial government. In comparison to other provinces, Québec faces the least success with integrating allophones immigrants into the labour market. Québec is also currently managing massive shortages in various fields of work within the provincial economy. With immigration targets set by the Federal Government of Canada and Government of Québec, current educational infrastructure must be enhanced for allophones to be better accommodated and trained to join the work force. For this paper, information on Québec’s retention …  Read more

2024 — Involvement of hypothalamic Rai1-dependent Bdnf pathways in body weight homeostasis
    Abstract

The treatment options for syndromic forms of obesity like Smith Magenis syndrome (SMS) are limited. The presence of cognitive impairments further complicates the management of obesity in these patients. In SMS, managing obesity requires substantial changes in lifestyle that may not be possible for patients to implement. Consequently, there is a pressing need to investigate alternative approaches to effectively treat obesity in patients with neurodevelopmental disorders to improve their overall quality of lives. The neurobiological basis of obesity in SMS is complex, primarily due to the haploinsufficiency of retinoic acid induced-1 (RAI1), which encodes an important transcription factor that regulates …  Read more

2024 — Anti-Sway Motion Planning for Robotic Arms with Passively Suspended End-Effectors
    Abstract

Read more

2024 — Synthesis of model compounds for a “bottom-up” approach to the eumelanin challenge
    Abstract

Read more

2024 — Plant-herbivore-microbiome interactions and their association with chemical defenses
    Abstract

Read more

2024 — Elucidating the Transcriptional Regulatory Roles of STAT3 and FOXA1 Transcription Factors in Genetically Engineered Mouse Models of Human Breast Cancer
    Abstract

Breast cancer is the predominant cancer type among Canadian women, with a striking incidence rate of one in eight women during their lifetime. Transcription factors play pivotal roles in breast cancer initiation and progression. Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (Stat3) is a transcription factor that mediates the expression of a variety of genes in response to cytokines and growth factors. The activation of Stat3 plays key roles in cell growth, survival and apoptosis, cell migration and invasion, and inflammation. Using the conditional Stat3 knockout mouse model, our lab previously demonstrated that Stat3 deficiency can impede the metastasis of …  Read more

2024 — Exploring the Simultaneous Stochastic Optimization of Mining Complexes: Integration of Equipment, Recovery, and Market Uncertainties
    Abstract

A mining complex is an integrated mineral value chain that consists of multiple interconnected components, from the extraction of ore to a set of sellable products. Over the last decade, advancements made in the field of mine planning have led to the development of simultaneous stochastic optimization of mining complexes. The cutting-edge framework of simultaneous stochastic optimization moves away from considering the economic value of blocks to the value of final products, allowing integrated value chain modelling and optimization. This thesis studies the simultaneous stochastic optimization framework through two real-world case studies, applying the methods and assessing the ability, impact, …  Read more

    2024 — Root development of maize «Zea mays» in water-deficient and nitrogen-limited soil
    Abstract

2024 — Application of Random Forest-based supervised ensemble learning method for hail nowcasting in the Midwestern United States
    Abstract

Timely and accurate nowcasting of hail events has significant societal and economic benefits yet remains a challenge due to the limitation of existing numerical weather prediction models in resolving mesoscale convective weather and the complex interactions of factors relevant to hailstorms. The evolution of hail in thunderstorms is a complex process that depends on several interacting factors, including atmospheric instability, updrafts strength, supercooled water content, and dry air in the troposphere. We investigated the possibility and skill of a machine learning method called Random Forests (RF) to nowcast hailstorms. This study applies the RF algorithm to nowcast hail in the …  Read more

2024 — The Structure of Invalid but Operative Legislation: Why the Notwithstanding Clause Does Not Preclude Judicial Review
    Abstract

A fundamental question concerning the legal effects of the notwithstanding clause is whether courts could conduct judicial review of legislation invoking the clause. The received wisdom on this question has been that the notwithstanding clause precludes judicial review. But in recent years, scholars have argued in different ways that the notwithstanding clause permits judicial review. This thesis critically builds on the arguments that the notwithstanding clause permits judicial review of protected legislation. It points out the problems with those arguments and proposes a revised theory of the notwithstanding clause which addresses the difficulties with those arguments. Along the way, it …  Read more

Read more

2024 — Measuring peer motivational climate in higher learning: Assessing the validity of the Peer Motivational Climate in Youth Sport Questionnaire in university mathematics classrooms
    Abstract

Peer motivational climate, defined as student perceptions of peer behaviours and attitudes that can promote or inhibit individual motivation, is an important feature of postsecondary learning environments. Although existing literature has provided valuable insights into the motivational functions of peers in classroom learning, the study of peer motivational climate is still in its infancy and requires greater methodological guidance, particularly in postsecondary STEM settings. Fortunately, sport psychologists have developed a measurement model of peer motivational climate in team sport settings: the widely-used Peer Motivational Climate in Youth Sport Questionnaire (PMC-YSQ). The aim of the current study was to determine the …  Read more

2024 — Carved Mis-Identities: Reassessing the Alleged African Figures on an 11th Century Byzantine Casket
    Abstract

This thesis examines the representation of alleged African figures on an 11th century ivory casket titled ‘Casket with Warriors and Dancers’ at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, challenging recent assertions made in the “Africa and Byzantium” exhibition. While the exhibition catalogue and wall text label the figures as African based on physical features such as hair texture and facial features, this thesis argues for a cautious approach to such categorizations and questions the reliability of identifying ethnic identities solely based on visual traits. By contextualizing the casket within its broader corpus and considering its material origins, this study proposes a …  Read more

Read more

2024 — Characterization of the role of Cripto in trophoblast cells during placental development
    Abstract

Cripto, a member of the Epidermal Growth Factor-Cripto/FRL-1/Cryptic (EGF-CFC1) protein family, plays a crucial role in embryonic development. In addition to embryonic expression, Cripto is expressed in extraembryonic tissues including the various trophoblast cell subtypes spongiotrophoblast and labyrinth sinusoidal giant cells. In human studies, dysregulation of Cripto expression adversely affects placental development and function. Previous findings have reported that Cripto expression is significantly higher in placental pathologies such as placenta accreta and placenta previa compared to normal placentas. Additionally, expression analysis of the EGF-CFC1 gene family demonstrate genetic associations with recurrent pregnancy loss. During mouse embryonic development, the homozygous deletion …  Read more

2024 — Increased striatal glutamate and dopamine transmission in young VPS35 D620N knock-in mouse model of Parkinson’s disease precedes reduced neurotransmission in old age
    Abstract

Read more

2024 — The development of a small molecule neuroserpin inhibitor towards the restoration of NGF metabolism in Alzheimer's disease
    Abstract

In Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) the atrophy and degeneration of the cholinergic neurotransmitter system, beginning with the basal forebrain cholinergic neurons (BFCNs), is central to the onset of cognitive symptoms. These BFCNs rely solely on mature nerve growth factor (mNGF) for their trophic support. Our McGill lab has discovered a metabolic system controlling the availability of mNGF and found this brain metabolic pathway compromised in AD at clinical as well as preclinical stages, resulting in a substantial loss of mNGF. Thus, a dysregulation of this NGF metabolic cascade leads to the deprivation of adequate trophic support of BFCNs, therefore resulting in …  Read more

2024 — Function of the transcription factor Autoimmune Regulator as a Vitamin D Receptor coactivator
    Abstract

The autoimmune regulator AIRE regulates the transcription of tissue-restricted antigens (TRAs) within medullary epithelial cells (mTECs) of the thymus. TRA self-peptide presentation is essential for elimination of developing T lymphocytes that are reactive to self, thus preventing autoimmune responses. Patients with mutations in AIRE develop a devastating disease called Autoimmune PolyEndocrinopathy Candidiasis Ectodermal Dystrophy (APECED), which is characterized by the development of multiple autoimmune conditions. Vitamin D deficiency has been implicated in increased risk of autoimmunity. The vitamin D receptor (VDR) is expressed in mTECs, and, interestingly, AIRE contains four LxxLL motifs, found in coactivators recruited to hormone-bound nuclear receptors. …  Read more
