2021 — Filamin in the z-disc: Identifying the ig domain of titin interacting with filamin and analyzing its mutations and associated phenotypes
    Abstract

…  Read more

2010 — The politics of race and the right to vote: the elections of 1876 and 2000
    Abstract

The elections of 1876 and 2000 were two of the most controversial elections in American history. In both cases the politics of race and the right to vote were at the centre of the controversies that erupted around the election of a candidate who had lost the popular vote. Although there are important differences that separated the two elections the 2000 election revealed that the right of Blacks merely to register and vote was still not guaranteed by the federal government much as it was not guaranteed in the nineteenth century. In both elections the issue of Black voting rights …  Read more

1994 — La correspondance de Flaubert à Louise Colet, 1851-1854
    Abstract

This study explores the letters which Flaubert wrote to Louise Colet between 1851 and 1854, and scrutinizes more particularly the dynamics of their epistolary relationship as well as the nature of the "contract" between the author and his mistress. A letter justifies and exists only by virtue of the distance and absence of the other person, and its appears that Flaubert resolutely availed himself of this mode of communication with Louise, and thus preserved efficiently the necessary solitude and silence for the composition of his work. The first part of the inquiry, which attempts to define the status and function …  Read more

1998 — Du commerce épistolaire : Baudelaire et ses correspondants, 1832-1866
    Abstract

This dissertation is devoted to an exploration of Baudelaire's correspondence from the sociopoetic perspective. Elements of form or style in the poet's letters, their unique pragmatics and social dimensions, are primary targets of inquiry. For Baudelaire, as for any epistolier, the writing of letters rests on the author's specific education, the traditions of his time, his philosophy, imagination and economic situation. As it is only through these different "filters" that Baudelaire's particular letter writing can be understood, the first part of this dissertation summarizes the main aspects of the socio-cultural history of epistolary practice in the nineteenth century. The second …  Read more

    1991 — Erasing Vitruvius ...
    Abstract

De architectura libri decim, the oldest extant treatise on Architecture in the Greco-Latin tradition, has historically constituted the archetype of architectural discourse, if its specific content would now seem largely irrelevant. And yet to the extent that we still distinguish theoretical activity and practice, we remain de-limited by the essential terms of the Vitruvian text, and the rational order which they prescribe, an order of the logos. But within the prescription itself we find the traces of a diversity and richness largely repressed, traces of an other logos, another understanding of the traditional world of artifice--including the artifice of writing--that …  Read more

1994 — Landscape alternatives for cost savings and resource conservation in medium-density Canadian housing
    Abstract

The grounds of Canadian homes typically consist of trimmed lawns sparsely planted with ornamental trees and shrubs. Despite their low initial cost and immediate impact, conventional landscapes require significant annual capital and physical resources, such as fuel, water, herbicides and fertilizer. However, low-maintenance alternatives exhibit lower consumption rates and annual cost savings. This paper investigates the saving potential of four low-maintenance alternatives when compared to a conventional option through an evaluation of life cycle cost and annual maintenance resource consumption. The five options were simulated using the proposed site and building of a low-rise, multi-residential housing project in Ottawa, where …  Read more

    Abstract

The purpose of this social work research project is to inquire into the life situations and personal adjustment patterns of a group of eighteen elderly Jewish men and women who have immigrated to Canada during their adult life. In approaching the study the writers will attempt to evaluate the life functioning of these patients from a three-dimensional focus. They will evaluate the patient as a physical organism, as a group member in society, and as a personality within a culture, and attempt to explore the interactions between these three areas of functioning.  Read more

1960 — Scattering and absorption of beta particles in a 4 pi proportional gas flow counter.
    Abstract

Radioactive nuclides are identified through the emissions given off in passing from one energy state to another. The type of emission and its energy is characteristic of the nuclide. The unstable nuclide may reach stability in a number of ways. These are dependent on several factors, among them being the excitation energy, nuclear spin, nuclear composition and nuclear shell structure. One of the most common ways for an active nucleus to reach stability is by emission of electromagnetic radiation.  Read more

1984 — Women at the wall : a study of prisoners' wives doing time on the outside
    Abstract

This thesis examines the social accommodations made by prisoners' wives as their husbands pass through various stages in the criminalization process. A combination of methods--in-depth interviews with wives, structured interviews with married prisoners, systematic examinations of prison records, summaries of women's "rap sessions," and a variety of other sources of data--were used to construct an ethnographic account of the social worlds of thirty women married to men incarcerated in two prisons in Vermont. Wives' accounts are quite consistent with other data sources. Prisoners' wives display considerable ingenuity in devising explanations and interpretations of their husbands' criminal behavior which allow their …  Read more

    Abstract

The investigation to be described in this thesis forms part of a research project carried out in the Department of Biochemistry, McGill University on the problems of the preservation of human blood. This larger study was initiated early in 1940, under the guidance of Dr. O.F. Denstedt, and has been in progress since that time. Although the use of preserved blood dates back to World War 1 when O.H. Robertson used specimens stored up to twenty-two days in the treatment of battle casualties, little attention was paid to the question until the Russians revived it in 1930.  Read more

    Abstract

"A study of the effect of digging depth on the speed of wheel-type sub drainage trending machines revealed an inverse linear relationship for the range of depths observed in several different soils. Both soil texture and machine characteristics affected the depth-speed relationship to a degree which prevented the use of a generalized formula for all machines in all soil types. Data are presented for 20 delay factors which occurred during normal trenching operations. An analysis of these delays showed that an average of 58.6 percent of the available digging time was lost. Delays which could most easily be reduced included …  Read more

The piece takes its title and inspiration from the work of the fourteenth-century master-illuminators and also makes reference to music of the same period, while at the same time being grounded in a post-serial aesthetic. The composition's relationship to these models and the specific compositional processes derived from the resulting fusion of certain aspects of mediaeval music (including modality and numerology) with serial technique are described and illustrated. The acetylcholine (ACh) stores of cat sympathetic ganglia were determined following a variety of patterns of preganglionic nerve stimulation and poet-stimulation rest periods. They increased by 38% over a 20 min rest following 60 min, 20/sec stimulation and remained elevated for at least 3 hr. The increase was less with 10 min stimulation and absent with 4/sec stimulation. The excess ACh was released during stimulation in the presence of hemicholinium-3. The time course or Ach release from stimulated plasma-perfused ganglia was followed. The release rate was highest near the onset of 20/sec stimulation and declined over 5 min to a …  Read more

2020 — Stress-induced changes in glutamate release and turnover: A PET [11C]ABP688 & MRS Study
    Abstract

Abnormal glutamate transmission is implicated in stress-related psychiatric disorders. Our ability to study the transmitter’s role in disease states and responses to therapeutic interventions would be greatly improved by the availability of a non-invasive method for the in vivo quantification of human brain glutamate release. One option is positron emission tomography (PET) with the labeled tracer, [11C]ABP688. ABP688 is a highly selective antagonist that binds to an allosteric site of the type 5 metabotropic glutamate receptor. Pharmacological challenge studies have raised the possibility that it might be responsive to acute glutamate fluctuations. Here, we explored [11C]ABP688’s sensitivity to a laboratory …  Read more

The currently accepted ideas on the formation of the pancreas revolve around the belief the organ developes from two separate primordial which arise from distinctly different points along the longitudinally disposed wall of the foregut. Accordingly it has been contended that certain portions of the duct system in the adult gland are associated with one or the other primordium developmentally. Many variations in the patterns displayed by the intraparenchymal duct system have been described but little attention has been given as to how such a wide range of variation might be explained from a developmental point of view. Abstract

Rhesus monkeys and chimpanzees that have been separated from their mothers, either at birth or some months later, and raised under restricted conditions in the laboratory, display stereotyped behavior patterns that are not usually seen in primates captured in the field (Davenport & Menzel, 1963; Mason & Green, 1962; Nissen, 1956) or in animals raised by their mothers in the laboratory (Jensen & Tolman, 1962). One of the most commonly observed forms of stereotypy in monkeys and chimpanzees is toe- or thumb-sucking (Masan, 1963); monkeys also display patterns of crouching, self-clasping, and rocking (Bernstein & Masan, 1962). The production of contrastive stress was studied in normal-hearing and severely and profoundly hearing-impaired children. A picture description task was used to elicit utterances. Contrastive stress was assigned by changing one element in the second and third pictures in sets of three pictures. Stress production was assessed perceptually and acoustically. The normal-hearing and the severely hearing-impaired children were judged to have consistently stressed the element that was changed in the pictures. Some of the profoundly hearing-impaired subjects were judged to have stressed the changed element more often than chance but some did not perform above chance. Acoustic measurements indicated that …  Read more

In the inter-war period Great Britain lost its pre-eminence in aviation. The new industries centered on civil aviation were not appropriately nurtured. The roots of this decline were in policies struck for military considerations in the pre 1914 period. The emergent institution of the war, the Air Ministry, continued the military priority. Civil Aviation was controlled by an essentially military institution. In the immediate post-war period airline development was inadequately subsidized. The government's chosen instrument, Imperial Airways, failed to nurture civil aviation development. Emergent national aspirations within the Empire and hostile and indifferent governments without frustrated airline route growth. Equally …  Read more
