This study incorporates archival and historical research on women poets and editors and their roles in the production of modernist and/or leftist little-magazine cultures in Canada. Where the first three chapters investigate women poets who were also magazine editors and/or members of magazine groups, the fourth chapter takes account of women magazine editors who were not themselves poets. Within this framework, the dissertation relates women's editorial work and poetry to a series of crises and transitions in Canada's leftist and modernist little-magazine cultures between 1926 and 1956. Macaroni is made from the coarse, ground middlings of the endosperm of durum wheat. This material is called semolina and closely resembles “cream of wheat” in appearance. The cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) constitutes an ohmic chloride channel, the gating of which is dependent on cAMP-dependent phosphorylation of a regulatory (R) domain and ATP binding and hydrolysis by two nucleotide binding domains (NBDs). Previous studies have suggested that CFTR activation results from PKA phosphorylation of the R-domain, which either relieves its inhibition of the channel, or induces a positive catalytic effect of this domain on ATP dependent gating. This work seeks to settle the doctrine of self-determination in international law. Drawing upon a selection of historical thinkers who have concentrated upon the value of freedom, a theory of political liberty, is developed. This is situated in relation to political history from the Age of Revolutions on. The development of the formal principle of self-determination is discussed. This reveals a doctrine lacking coherence. The philosophy of political liberty is proposed as a foundation for self-determination in law. This study investigated the use of English in Quebec offices; it further examined the knowledge and strategies used by francophones as they perform various business-related tasks in English. A sample of 26 offices located in a primarily francophone community were surveyed regarding what tasks employees were required to perform in English. Results showed that all but one required some level of English proficiency. It is to be noted that 46% of the offices surveyed conducted all of their business within Quebec's borders. This investigation is essentially a statistical analysis of the pattern of folding. In order to disclose the pattern of folding in a region as complex as the Howson creek area, it is necessary to determine the tops of beds. The most valuable criteria for such determinations are primary sedimentary structures, notably cross-lamination, graded bedding and ripplemark. The order $G sb{F}m sbsp{t}{2}$ electro-weak corrections to the decay $t to bW sp+$ are calculated, arising essentially from virtual radiation of the Higgs boson. For large $m sb{t}$ these represent the dominant effect serving to shift the top lifetime from its tree level value. In practice, for $m sb{t}$ $<$ 240 $GeV$ these corrections are typically 0.1%. A comparison with recent calculations of the complete electro-weak and strong effects is made. The results of a series of tests in which three diets composed essentially of wheat were fed to human subjects indicated that the ground wheat muffins diet and shredded wheat diet tested were probably of the same digestible energy value. These two diets were combined to form one basal diet which was fed with supplements of raw and cooked egg at three levels in a second series of tests to humans and in a third series to rats. A new apparatus was designed and built to study the ignition delay of propane and other gaseous fuels when injected into a stream of air heated above the spontaneous ignition temperature of the fuel under study. The apparatus was designed to achieve a homogeneous fuel/air mixture as quickly as possible in order that the ignition delay due to the chemical reactions of combustion primarily might be studied. Myelin is a lipid-rich molecular bilayer that supports neuron function, stabilizes axons, helps synchronize neurotransmission, and remains plastic throughout life. The relationship between experience and adaptive myelination is best studied using animal models. Social isolation (SI) is a deprivation paradigm that elicits hypomyelination in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and behaviour deficits including impaired sociability and increased anxiogenic behaviour. The regio- and diastereoselectivity in the coupling of $ gamma$-substituted allylic bromides with aldehydes mediated by indium in water were examined and found to be dependent on the steric effect of the substituents on both the allylic bromides and the aldehydes. Despite the efficiency with which indium mediates carbon-carbon bond formation between allyl halides and aldehydes in an aqueous environment, it is not without short-comings. Nitro-functionalised aldehydes were found to be susceptible to the reductive conditions of this aqueous indium Barbier-Type reaction. This thesis examines systematic sources of variance in raters' judgments of second (L2) language speech, including rater cognitive and experience variables, rating scale properties, and characteristics of the speech, in order to better understand influences on raters' scoring decisions. The thesis culminates in the development of an empirically-based L2 comprehensibility scale that describes, with greater precision, the quality of speech that is characteristic at different comprehensibility levels. Study 1 examines the effect of individual differences in raters' cognitive abilities on their ratings of L2 speech. This exploratory, mixed-design study investigates whether intelligibility is "enough," that is, a suitable goal and an adequate assessment criterion, for evaluating proficiency in the pronunciation of non-native English speaking graduate students in the academic domain. The study also seeks to identify those pronunciation features which are most crucial for intelligible speech. The early Christian text known as the 'Letter to the Hebrews' has presented a riddle to scholarship. Its anonymity and anomalous form are puzzling. Scholars like Norman Perrin and Barnabas Lindars also-find Hebrews enigmatic because it does not appear to represent the views of any early Christian community. This thesis contends that the riddle of Hebrews' lack of community-fit is due to a conceptual flaw. In recent decades, it has become common for medical practitioners and researchers to refer to patients from certain marginalized backgrounds (low socio-economic status, homeless, etc) as ‘vulnerable.’ But what does vulnerability entail in these contexts? In the particular setting of socio-medical interventions with homeless individuals, who is actually vulnerable? The service users? The professionals? Both? Based on three months of ethnographic fieldwork with two different socio-medical organizations offering services to homeless individuals in Marseille (France), this thesis situates vulnerability in-between different theoretical concepts, social relations, and social policies. This thesis presents the realization of a characterization method for optical waveguides in terms of propagation loss. The method employs a highly linear video camera aided by a personal computer running image processing and analysis software. After a brief theoretical overview, the design of the experimental set-up and its realization are introduced. Several optical waveguides are examined using the present method and loss values are obtained for various channel waveguides built on silicon substrates, with the experimental results detailed for two such wafers. Quantal nicotinic transmission, from about half of the preganglionic inputs to the perfused rat superior cervical ganglion, was more potent and better sustained when activity was in short, high frequency bursts, rather than in continuous trains, regardless of train frequency. The advantage of short bursts was in producing post-tetanic potentiation, while limiting both depression of synaptic potential amplitude and increases in failure rate that were evident during long trains. Presynaptic bursting was also more effective in suppressing, via muscarinic and non-cholinergic mechanisms, the postganglionic cell afterhyperpolarization. A new method for the synthesis of the [4,3,1] carbocyclic core of the squalene synthase and farnesyl transferase inhibitor CP-225,917 is developed. The key step relies on the [6+4] cycloaddition between a tropone and a cyclopentadiene. This reaction proceeds with excellent regio- and stereoselectivity and allows rapid and convergent access to the polycyclic core of the molecule. In the course of this work, it was discovered that the cycloaddition process is significantly accelerated in presence of the catalytic amount of ZnCl2. In anaesthetized, paralyzed, ventilated and vagotomized cats, stimulation of somatic afferent nerves at fixed times in the respiratory cycle could delay or advance the onset of the next respiratory phase. Repetitive stimulation produced sustained increases in respiratory frequency, entrainment of the frequency of the respiratory oscillator to that of stimulation occurring in half of the cats. These observations demonstrate the existence of a reflex pathway which may account for the locking of respiratory frequency to the period of rhythmic muscular activity. The ventilatory response of supine anesthetized and conscious man and of upright exercising subjects to added linear inspiratory flow resistive loads applied at FRC has been studied. The immediate drop in ventilation was surprisingly small in the face of large loads. The role of the passive properties of the ventilatory pump in stabilizing ventilation has been studied by comparing observed volumes of the first loaded breath with volumes predicted from equations based on an electrical analogue.  Read more
