2013 — Crossing the Racial Hiring Divide in Public Education: First Nation Teachers Encounters with Employee Fit, Merit, and White Racial Innocence
    Abstract

In the Yukon Territory, significant social, political and legal efforts have been put in place to articulate equality between First Nations and non-First Nations people, not as equality based on good will, but equity as a legal right. These significant accomplishments in the advancement of First Nations rights include recent land claims agreements and self-government agreements, employment equity policy and staffing protocol. In contrast to these statements of legal equality, this study examines the ways in which hiring challenges encountered by First Nations teachers—as racialized individuals in Northern Canada—are made to appear normative and natural. The hiring challenges exist despite …  Read more

2015 — Resource Use and Ecological Population Structure of Lake Whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) Spawning Aggregations in Lake Huron
    Abstract

Lake Whitefish are a commercially and ecologically valuable freshwater species in Lake Huron. Recent environmental changes have had broad impacts on current populations, which threaten the sustainability of this fishery. To properly conserve this resource, multiple sub-populations in the lake must be adequately represented in management regimes. Of special importance are adult spawning aggregations, which collectively contribute to the productivity of the fishery. However, spawning aggregations in Lake Huron are perceived to represent multiple stocks, adding complexity to fisheries management. The current population structure for adult Lake Whitefish is not well understood at the lake wide scale, and previous assessments …  Read more

2023 — Fouling in membrane technology for produced water treatment: Assessing mechanisms, mitigation, and CFD Analysis
    Abstract

Due to environmental discharge regulations and compliance, the need for oily wastewater treatment and reuse for sustainability has become a pressing reality. Membrane-based technologies for oily wastewater separation have grown in popularity due to their energy efficiency, chemical/thermal resistance, and low cost. The membrane can separate a wide range of oily wastewater effluents and deliver good permeate quality. While the membrane technology witnessed many improvements, membrane fouling continues to be a major drawback and is the downside of the large-scale adoption of this technology. To improve membrane performance, understanding membrane fouling development is the final objective of many researchers. In …  Read more

2020 — Pipe Inspection Automation with Mobile Ground Vehicles
    Abstract

The goal of this research is to develop a series of mobile robotics projects for inspection of infrastructure to release humans of dirty, dangerous and dull tasks and give them more time to think and to create. To achieve this, one should consider the design of two different elements which are essential for the inspection of infrastructures like pipes, a locomotion unit and the way to control this locomotion unit and an imaging sensor in order to acquire information to make decisions. This is why three experiments are presented, 1) a robotic platform to scan pipes with collimated laser-lines in …  Read more

2022 — A web-based system with preferences for learning Qualitative Constraint Networks
    Abstract

In this thesis, a web-based system is designed to learn and solve a Qualitative Constraint Network (QCN) based on User’s requirements and preferences in the particular case of temporal information. The constraint network is a set of time events that are related to each other. The application first asks the user to input the events defining a given temporal network. After that, queries are asked to learn the relations between the events. During this process Path Consistency (transitive closure) is applied to infer new relations and reduce the number of queries, with the help of Allen’s interval algebra composition table. …  Read more

2017 — Variable habitat selection and space use among bullsnake (Pituophis catenifer sayi) populations: distance between seasonal habitats drives space use
    Abstract

The distribution of resources determines space use and habitat selection by snakes. Particularly in northern areas, the proximity of overwintering den sites to summering habitat likely influences space use. The resources driving seasonal movements among habitats may vary among populations and thus, space and habitat requirements may also vary. In addition, human modification may affect resource use by altering available habitats and resources. Although previous studies have reported differences in spatial ecology among populations, the driving factors of this variation remain to be addressed for many species. Bullsnakes (Pituophis catenifer sayi) reach their northern range limits in southern Saskatchewan, where …  Read more

2018 — Can Patient Characteristics at Intake Predict Patient Response to Therapist-Assisted, Transdiagnostic Internet-Delivered Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?
    Abstract

Internet-delivered interventions for anxiety and depression show promise in both their effectiveness at reducing symptoms and their efficiency in routine practice. Still, some patients do not benefit from these programs, and there is limited understanding of factors that predict patient response. The current study investigates predictors of patient response to the Wellbeing Course, a transdiagnostic, therapist-assisted internet-delivered cognitive behavioural therapy designed to treat depression and anxiety. Case files from 1201 patients who participated in a recent open trial of the Wellbeing Course were analyzed to examine predictors of dropout (i.e., withdrawing from the course before completing all modules) and symptom …  Read more

2023 — Treating comorbid insomnia in patients receiving transdiagnostic Internet-delivered Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for anxiety and depression: A randomized controlled trial
    Abstract

Studies have demonstrated that transdiagnostic Internet-delivered Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (ICBT) programs for patients experiencing anxiety and depression can produce large improvements in symptoms. Comorbid insomnia is common among individuals seeking treatment for anxiety and depression, yet transdiagnostic ICBT programs rarely target insomnia and many ICBT patients report that symptoms of insomnia remain after treatment. The current trial was designed to explore the value of including a brief intervention for insomnia alongside an existing transdiagnostic program (Wellbeing Course). A new insomnia intervention was developed using a patient-oriented approach to maximize ease-of-understanding and overall acceptability to patients. Patients were randomly assigned to …  Read more

2013 — Underlying Cognitive Components and Conceptual Knowledge in Arithmetic
    Abstract

Within the field of mathematical cognition there is extensive research on conceptual knowledge of arithmetic operations. There is also extensive research on the link between mathematical ability and spatial ability. This research study seeks to build on both areas of research and identify ways in which they are interrelated. Conceptual knowledge of arithmetic operations is the subject of ongoing research. When solving a three-term problem of the form a x b ÷ b, those who understand the inversion concept do not need to perform any calculations because they know that the multiplication and division operations cancel each-other out. When solving …  Read more

2018 — Analyse Morphosemantique et Contextuelle Du Mot et du Terme en Langue Generale et en Terminologie.
    Abstract

As language units consisting of spoken sounds and their written representation which operate as carriers of meaning, words and terms have been major objects of study on the convergence and divergence between general language and specialized language. Generally, terms are considered as special kind of words, but terminological arguments see them as basic terminological units used to designate concepts pertaining to specialized discipline, while words have been presented as units for general usage and for linguistic analysis. Linguists and terminologists argue that the similarity between words and terms is due to the morphological structure which they both have, resulting from …  Read more

2024 — Numerical study of dam break flow using shallow water equations with particle method approach
    Abstract

A significant concern in fluid dynamics is the dam-break phenomenon, which involves the sudden release of water when a dam breaks down. This event is made more complex due to the presence of obstructions, such as both natural and artificial elements, which can alter the flow of the water. The Moving Particle Semi-Implicit (MPS) method is a numerical method used in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), which combines the advantages of semi-implicit and particle methods. The method has been developed to help simulate water flow behavior after a dam-break. This method breaks the domain into pieces referred to as particles, each …  Read more

2022 — Use of polymeric membranes for the treatment of oily wastewater: Modification using inorganic nanoparticles and optimization of filtration parameters
    Abstract

Polymeric membranes have proven to be an effective method for the treatment of contaminated waters. Many factors influence their performances including the operating parameters, fabrication process and conditions, and modifications using different additives. Introduced as additives, nanoparticles are capable of enhancing membrane performance via their intrinsic properties which include morphology, core size, and chemical nature. Nevertheless, common problems, such as nanoparticle agglomeration or leaching and the formation of defective areas, may occur during the membrane fabrication. These issues depend on several factors which were observed to influence the membrane morphology and structure and consequently influence the effectiveness of water treatment. …  Read more

2016 — "Fighting the Wrong War": Radical Pacifists and the Vietnam Antiwar Movement, 1962-1964
    Abstract

The Vietnam antiwar movement developed in stages that reflected the escalation of American involvement in South Vietnam. Between 1962 and 1964 radical pacifist leaders responded to this escalation by questioning the legitimacy of an American military presence in South Vietnam, identifying the issues of supporting a troubled national government that allegedly failed to meet its commitments to social justice, and challenging the foundational Cold War policies that defined American involvement in Southeast Asia. Through their collected response, the radical pacifists concluded that America’s military intervention against Communism in South Vietnam could not succeed because of the political, social, and economic …  Read more

2012 — Application of Function Approximations to Reservoir Engineering
    Abstract

The need for function approximations arises in many branches of engineering, and in particular, petroleum engineering. A function approximation estimates an unknown function, which then finds an underlying relationship within a given set of input-output data. In this study, a Multiple Regression Analysis (MRA), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and Least Squares Support Vector Machine (LS-SVM) are applied to address some of the most three important ongoing challenges in reservoir engineering. The three ongoing challenges are reservoir fluid properties in the absence of PVT analysis, average reservoir pressure and oil production prediction. 1. The PVT properties of crude-oil such as the …  Read more

2012 — Experimental Studies for Development of a Purification Process for Single and Mixed Amine Solvents
    Abstract

Amine solvents used for the removal of CO2 from flue gas are subject to solvent degradation, which results from the reaction of impurities in the gas stream. This leads to the formation of degradation products, which could lead to many operational problems such as changes in the solvent absorption capacity and physical properties. Amine thermal (distillation) or non-thermal (ion-exchange or electrodialysis) reclamation are usually used to purify the solvents. In post-combustion CO2 1- The reclamation process might not effectively handle single or blended amine solvents. The solvent recovery could be low while its content in the waste stream could be …  Read more

    2020 — Cost-Sensitive and Semi-Supervised Learning for Fraud
    Abstract

Given the magnitude of e-auction transactions, it becomes challenging to safeguard consumers from dishonest sellers, such as shill bidders. Shill Bidding (SB) is a predominant auction fraud that is driven by modern-day technologies and clever scammers. The difficulty of identifying the behavior of sophisticated fraudsters and the scarcity of training dataset, hinder the research on SB detection. The first part of this thesis aims to address these two difficult problems. We first define two new SB patterns and implement other existing SB patterns. Next, we develop a reliable SB dataset. This development requires crawling commercial auctions and bidder history, preprocessing …  Read more

2013 — Identification and Characterization of Developmentally Regulated Components of the Stress Axis in Petromyzon Marinus
    Abstract

Genes resembling elements of the Corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) receptor-ligand system (CRH system) have been identified in invertebrate species and suggest the CRH system has existed, in some form, for approximately a billion years. It is theorized that vertebrates inherited components of the CRH system from an invertebrate ancestor. The association of the CRH system with the stress response, however, is specific to vertebrate species and theorized to have accompanied the development of hypothalamic pituitary (HP) axes, specifically the HP interrenal (HPI) axis in fish. A functional HPI axis has recently been suggested in the lamprey species Petromyzon marinus, a …  Read more

2017 — Vers un traitement sémantique des prépositions françaises: Le cas de à et de de
    Abstract

A preposition is very important in the structuring of sentences and phrases in the French language. It is the relation or link between a verb and another verb, between a noun and another noun. Our work in this regard tries to look at the semantic characteristics of French prepositions with particular interest on the use of à and de. À in English can be at, and to, while de can either be of, from, about, etc, depending on the context in which they are used. While it is believed that a number of linguists may be less aware of the …  Read more
