AB - This article talks about the inscription of traditional and modern art traditions inside contemporary creations in the form of a material memory. Some of these creations elaborate a fruitful dialogue with the founding traditions of art history. This dialogue manifests itself in the form of a return by which certain elements of the original are reinvested by creating visual or scenic configurations (devices) that are contemporary to the spectators. This logic of return is different from the postmodern strategy of recycling, in the sense that it is dialogical. Our argument is based on three case studies : the installation Uraniborg by French artist Laurent Grasso (Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, in 2013); the scenacoustic Stifters Dinge by Heiner Goebbels (Avignon, 2008); and finally Gob Squad’s Kitchen (Usine C, 2013) created by the Gob Squad group in reference to Andy Warhol’s film Kitchen that serves as a basis for revisiting the American avant-garde by way of a theatrical experience.
