La marginalisation de l'Autre est une nécessité pour le Soi collectif dès lors qu'il veut se définir, dès lors qu'il veut cerner son identité. Elle sert à baliser les frontières de la norme. Aux limites d'elle-même toute société s'invente donc des marginaux. L'examen de textes publiés au Québec (manuels scolaires, romans, quotidiens) indique que l'imaginaire québécois érige l'Amérindien en l'un de ces marginaux. L'auteur réfléchit librement au processus de fabrication du marginal amérindien et de voir comment ce n'est pas tant le contour de l'image de l'Autre qui importe -un contour qui se modifie avec le temps-mais davantage la distance géographique et sociologique que l'on établit entre l'Autre et Soi, une distance qui, elle, est voulue permanente.

The Importance of Fences. Reflections on the marginalisation of North American Indians

Once the collective Serf begins the process of defining if s identity, the marginalisation of the Other becomes a necessity. This process serves to delineate the boundaries of the norm. At the edges of all societies then, marginals are invented. A study of texts published in Quebec (school manuals, novels and newspapers) indicates that the québécois collective imagination has designated the North American Indian as one of these marginals. The author tries to reflect freely on the process whereby the marginal North American Indian is " fabricated ". The author also tries to point out that the basic outline of the Other is not what counts (because this outline may change with the times), but rather the geographic and social distance which is established between Self and Other. A distance that is intended to be permanent.
