Le limerick est une forme poétique fixe qui articule généralement un contenu obscène et/ou absurde. Situé dans les marges de la poésie, ce genre, très productif, est particulier à l'univers culturel anglophone. Folkloristes et amateurs de limericks ont établi un abondant corpus qui offre à la curiosité de l'ethnologue un objet de choix dans la mesure où il donne accès aux marges de la culture anglo-saxonne, aux points précis où cette culture bascule symboliquement en son contraire, par le biais d'un discours mettant en scène la transgression des tabous.

L'hypothèse que propose cet essai est que le limerick en tant que genre est le lieu d'opérations mé-taculturelles qui représentent et manipulent les règles qui définissent la culture du contexte social dans lequel il fonctionne.

Abstract

Poetry at the margin : limericks

The limerick is a fixed poetic form whose content is generally obscene and/or absurd. Situated in the margins of poetry, this very productive genre is particular to English-speaking cultures. Folklo-rists and amateurs of limericks have gathered and published numerous collections which offer an intriguing ethnological object of study inasmuch as it provides a privileged access to the margins of Anglo-saxon culture. Limericks indeed form a discourse that refers principally to the transgressions of tabous, thus focusing on the borderline beyond which the culture concerned is symbolically reversed.

The hypothesis proposed in this essay is that the limerick as a genre constitutes an idiom where metacultural operations which represent and manipulate the culture-defining rules of its social context can take place.
