Both Madeleine Doyon-Ferland and Simonne Voyer became interested in the traditions of North America's francophone population, particularly in Québec and Acadia. The former, in charge of the secretariat of the new chair of Folklore at Laval University, became in 1944 professor of folklore and ethnology. She pursued her research and teaching career there and specialized in rhythmic, games and amusements, costumes and customs. In the early 1950s, Madeleine Doyon met Simonne Voyer, a spirited woman who had a passion for dance. They collaborated for years within the folklore archives. Associated with Luc Lacoursière's team, Simonne Voyer continued her research in the field and her self-improvement parallel to her teaching career. These two women opened original avenues of research. Their contribution is still considered as major for the progress of their respective fields of specialization and for ethnology in Québec and Canada.

The development of regional historiography in Québec dates back to the 1920s and 1930s and may be seen as a sort of successor to the colonization monographs of peripheral regions produced between 1850 and 1914. While publications devoted to local and parochial history are relatively abundant in the inter-war period, rare are those which attempt to present an overview of the evolution of a particular region. The article proposes an analysis of six main overviews of regional history published in the period: the Bois-Francs by Father Charles-Edouard Mailhot, the Gaspé peninsula by Brother Antoine Bernard, Témiscamingue by Augustin Chénier, the Outaouais by Father Louis Taché et al., the Saguenay by Monsignor Victor Tremblay and the Eastern Townships by Monsignor Albert Gravel. Although the level of training and the historical and methodological rigor of these authors are not the same, they share certain aspects of a similar interpretative context in which French Canadian occupation of the territory and the clergy's role in the construction of local and regional structures are seen as important. Also, a weak point common to these overviews is their handling of economic history. With one exception, these authors are all priests and belong to the generation born in the 1890s. Following the example set by Monsignor Albert Tessier of Trois-Rivières who was an inspiration for several, these historians became the promoters of the regionalist movement of the 1930s.

This article explores the relationship between history and fictional literature and calls into question the resistance of historians to make use of fiction as a documentary source. It is proposed that history does not have a privileged contact with "reality" but is itself a construct, a representation, and as a narrative, it is confronted with the problem of fiction. The text tries to answer the following question: what are the perceived problems and results of an intellectual history of Québec based on a fictional corpus or which includes the fictional?

Convinced that the university's mission is not only professional but also cultural, religious, moral, and national, Lionel Groulx prepared a vade-mecum. It portrays an ideal student characterized by a strong personality: he is simultaneously a resistant from a religious and traditionalist point of view, and a collaborator in the making of a more just and fraternal homeland. He is already an active citizen who, through the Association catholique de la jeunesse canadienne-française, strives to perfect his education. He is committed here and now but under the supervision of the priest. This kind of supervised freedom emphasizes the ambiguity of the student condition.

This article reproduces the texts that certain Renaissance authors, historians, chroniclers and essayists wrote while inspired by stories of travel histories of discovery as well as by the observations of travelers and Amerindians. With the exception of those written by Montaigne, they are practically unknown. I thus complete an investigation which earlier brought me to publish an entire collection of exotic poems in a volume entitled L'Amérique et les Poètes français de la Renaissance (texts presented and annotated by Roger Le Moine, Ottawa, 1972, 350 p. (Coll. Les Isles fortunées). The texts are for the most part preceded and followed by short commentaries without analysis. My objective consisted in making them available and accessible.

Through an investigation of the career of Joseph de Nancrède (1761-1841), this article examines the network of francophone printers who distinguished themselves in North America at the end of the eighteenth century. At the crossroads of the American and French cultures, Joseph de Nancrède also became interested in the future of Québec and then Lower Canada. Not only did he participate in the American war of independence but he also taught French at Harvard, Massachusetts and founded in 1789 the Courier de Boston. It was in the latter city that he met the Canadian chronicler Pierre de Sales Laterrière and began a long career as editor in the same period that Fleury Mesplet resuscitated the Gazette de Montréal. While explaining the French Revolution to his newly found compatriots, he also introduced them to Fénelon, Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, Brissot de Warville and the French classics. Once he became a naturalized American, he also worked in France where he intervened in the exportation of the Desjardins collection to Lower Canada. Near the end of his life he befriended Louis-Joseph Papineau who became the executor of his will. Joseph de Nancrède's career spans one of the most eventful periods in the life of the French, American and Canadian nations, the founding years of the Atlantic revolutions.

In 1836, the Parliament of Lower Canada and the colonial government were in a deadlock. The Legislative Council used and abused its veto, Governor Gosford had lost all credibility in the eyes of the patriot majority in the House and London had yet to provide an answer to the recriminations of 1834 contained in the 92 Resolutions. Up to that point, the refusal to vote the subsidies had been the weapon of the members of Parliament but the Executive began to ignore the decisions of Parliament with respect to the budget. In September 1836, the members of Parliament met in session and decided to refuse any collaboration whatsoever. In a word, they went on strike. From that point onwards, the colonial government was totally paralyzed. The battle was thus engaged and the 1791 constitution, revealing all its structural deficiencies, was nearing its end.

Following the discovery of three types of brass religious medals brought to light in an archeological context of the beginning of the eighteenth century on the site of the Intendants Palace at Québec, the author tries to establish their cultural significance by reinserting them in the different contexts from which they sprung. This contextual archeological method is based on an approach which incorporates the micro-scale of the Intendance, and of New France up to the macro-scale of the European context of baroque production. The results of this analysis address the question of the relation between these medals and missionary activity in addition to racial mixing.
