L’épingle et son double en Nouvelle-France The straight pin and its double in New France

Résumé

Le point de départ de cet article est de situer la place occupée dans la culture matérielle de la Nouvelle-France par un artéfact d’apparence anodine, l’épingle droite en laiton. La première partie du texte traite de l’histoire de cet objet et de sa fabrication, tandis que la deuxième partie est consacrée aux usages et fonctions qu’on lui connaît, à partir de données archéologiques accumulées. Enfin, la découverte archéologique d’une bouteille de sorcières dans les fortifications de Québec a amené l’auteur à élaborer une troisième partie portant sur l’imaginaire de l’épingle ; d’où le titre de cet article.

Abstract

The starting point of this essay is to determine the place occupied in the material culture of New France by an apparently insignificant artefact, the brass straight pin. The first part of the text deals with the history and the fabrication of this object, whereas the second part focuses on its uses and functions known from archaeological data. Lastly, the archaeological discovery of a witch bottle in the Quebec City fortifications has led the author to write a third part on the imaginary realm surrounding pins ; whence the title of this article.
