En 1902, les Capucins, originaires de Toulouse en France, fondent un couvent à Limoilou (Québec), ils y établissent leur noviciat et prennent en charge la paroisse Saint-Charles. Selon les règles de l’Ordre, ils se dotent d’une bibliothèque et y rassemblent, au cours du XX^e siècle, une collection de 2 500 brochures qui témoignent de leur approche de la vie religieuse, sociale et politique du milieu québécois. La brochure est une publication modeste, souvent jugée sans valeur, mais la sélection que l’on en fait, les titres conservés au fil du temps dans une bibliothèque conventuelle comme celle des Capucins, révèlent des champs d’intérêt, rappellent des débats et des réalités sociales et prennent la valeur d’une source pour l’histoire.

Abstract

In 1902 a group of Capuchin brothers, originally from Toulouse in France, founded a convent in Limoilou (Québec), where they established their novitiate and took charge of the Parish of St. Charles. In keeping with the rules of the Order, they established a library where, over the course of the 20th century, they collected some 2500 pamphlets bearing witness to the Capuchins’ approach to religious, social and political life in Québec. A pamphlet is a modest publication, often deemed of little value, but the titles collected and preserved over the years in a convent library such as that of the Capuchins reveal the brothers’ centres of interest and bring us face to face with the social issues of the day. In doing so, they offer a valuable resource for historians.
