AB - Using Arthur Buies’s correspondence, the souvenirs of his companion during their participation to Garibaldi’s campaign in Sicily and a contribution on the liberal Italian leader, this study explores the construction of Buies’s affect and thought from his birth in 1840 to his return in Canada and the beginning of his career as lecturer at the Institut canadien de Montréal and as writer. His youth, the disturbing family and paternal experience, his bohemian life in Paris and his colourful participation to Garibaldi’s march of « the Thousand » allow a better understanding of the formation of the independant spirit and of the liberal mind of this « Rouge » before his Lower-Canadian career.
