Résumé

La publication en 1839 du livre Hochelaga Depicta de Newton Bosworth (William Greig, éditeur) marque un moment important dans l’histoire de l’édition et des connaissances sur Montréal et le Bas-Canada. Non seulement l’ouvrage comprend des pages sur la préhistoire et l’histoire récente de Montréal, dont les rébellions de 1837-1838, mais il décrit et illustre plusieurs bâtiments et institutions (églises, maisons d’enseignement, banques et hôtels) alors existantes. Ainsi, il représente un moment dans l’évolution architecturale de la ville, alors que la plupart des édifices publics de la période de la Nouvelle-France ont fait place à des édifices en pierre de taille de deux étages en moyenne qui seront appelés à disparaître au cours des années 1870-1880. Le livre fournit un compendium des connaissances sur la ville coloniale et s’adresse surtout à la communauté anglophone et aux personnes de passage, militaires et touristes. Son approche vise à célébrer l’importance et l’intérêt de Montréal afin de stimuler l’immigration et de vanter ses réalisations des dernières années.

Abstract

The publication in 1839 of Newton Bosworth’s Hochelaga Depicta (William Greig, publisher) represented an important moment in the history of publishing and knowledge about Montreal and Lower Canada. Not only does the book include pages on Montreal’s prehistory and recent history, including the rebellions of 1837- 1838, but it also describes and illustrates many of the buildings and institutions (churches, schools, banks and hotels) in existence at the time. As such, it represents a moment in the city’s architectural evolution, as most of the public buildings from the New France period gave way to two-story ashlar buildings that were to disappear in the 1870-1880s. The book provides a compendium of knowledge about the colonial city, and is aimed primarily at the English-speaking community and those passing through, military personnel and tourists alike. Its approach is to underline the importance and interest of Montreal, to stimulate immigration and to extol its achievements of recent years.
