L’écrivain imaginaire dans la nouvelle de l’Ouest : Marguerite-A. Primeau, Lise Gaboury-Diallo, Gisèle Villeneuve et Claudine Potvin

Résumé

En postulant, d’une part, que la construction textuelle de la figure de l’artiste, que celui-ci soit écrivain, peintre ou musicien, a forcément quelque chose d’autofictionnel et, d’autre part, que les rapports que l’artiste sent avoir vis-à-vis des instances de la légitimation reçoivent un traitement métaphorique sur le plan de la spatialisation, nous nous intéresserons dans cet article aux façons dont la nouvelle traite de l’artiste, de la pratique et de la réception de son art. La prémisse principale est que les conditions de production réelles infléchissent la construction des conditions fictives de sorte que plus l’écrivain se perçoit légitimé, plus l’artiste imaginaire chez lui a tendance à circuler dans des espaces définis et d’ordre institutionnel. Le choix des écrivaines à l’étude permettra de valider cette prémisse dans la mesure où elles écrivent ou écrivaient toutes en tant que résidantes de l’Ouest canadien, mais en entretenant chacune des rapports avec une francophonie différente et aussi, par conséquent, avec des institutions littéraires différentes. Il s’agit de Marguerite-A. Primeau, Lise Gaboury-Diallo, Gisèle Villeneuve et Claudine Potvin.

Abstract

In postulating, on the one hand, that the textual construction of the figure of the artist—whether the artist be a writer, a painter or a musician—necessarily involves elements of the autofictional and, on the other hand, that relationships between the artist and instances of legitimization are illustrated via metaphoric treatment at the level of spatialization, this article discusses the ways in which the short story depicts the artist as well as the practice and reception of his art. The article’s central premise is that the conditions of real production inflect the construction of fictional conditions to the extent that the more the artist perceives legitimacy, the more the imaginary artist tends to circulate within defined spaces and of institutional order. The selection of writers included in this study allow for the testing of this premise given that each of the authors writes or wrote as a resident of western Canada while maintaining an individual relationship with a different Francophonie and, as a result, with different literary institutions. The writers in question are Marguerite-A. Primeau, Lise Gaboury-Diallo, Gisèle Villeneuve and Claudine Potvin.
