AB - The author begins by confronting us with the question "Why, indeed, should we discuss artists and their status?" He answers by ascertaining that there is no subject more decisive than that of symbols and reality. Yet, he remarks that societies have made a habit of tragically ignoring artists. The main cause for this occurrence is the development of cultural industries which promptly label the work of the creators, thus authorizing it's exploitation. Consequently, in spite of the fact that the contribution of these industries to the socio-economic and cultural evolution is indubitably fundamental, the life style and working conditions of artists tend to be very precarious. Indeed, artists are stagnating in a judicial situation which is just as indecent as that of their socio-economic means, hence endangering creation itself. These observations bring the author to question the status of the artist in light of the incidence the following factors have on the artist's condition: the contract stipulating artistic obligations, remuneration, revenues, collective agreements, the circulation of the art works and professional training.
