Since they created their Doyon-Rivest "corporate" identity in 2000, artists Mathieu Doyon and Simon Rivest have been exploring the interrelationships between advertising and art, mimicking methods of advertising in order to examine its specificities and functions. With the project Thanks for being there, Doyon/Rivest raises the interaction between advertising and art to a new level by creating promotional objects that bear their logo—objects that they then feature in a "real" advertising campaign. Doyon-Rivest is attempting to blur the border between advertising and art and to reduce, subversively, the gap between great art and a practice belonging to mass culture.

Le projet Great North Development Group de l’artiste multidisciplinaire Mike Yuhasz explore comment nous concevons et entrons en relation avec le territoire dans le monde complexe d’aujourd’hui. Yuhasz élabore des documents informatifs qui comportent des messages contradictoires et trompeurs sur l’éthique du consommateur. Son projet traite autant de notre potentiel collectif de perception, de compréhension et d’exploitation de la terre comme territoire que de la « sophistication » des modalités de présentation de renseignements sur notre société, explorant ainsi les paramètres d’opération des médias contemporains et de la culture d’entreprise.

Frank Breuer, photographe de Cologne, est un virtuose du vide. Ses images d’entrepôts, désolés mais étrangement beaux, et de structures pour enseignes d’entreprise semblent en grande partie avoir été vidées de toute signification discursive ou de commentaire. Parce que les entrepôts et les structures vidées de leurs signes n’offrent aucune articulation interne, ils sont essentiellement dépourvus d’échelle, dotés de temporalité plutôt que d’intériorité, ayant plus à voir avec la durée, l’extension et la prolifération que l’architecture ou le concept. Par extrapolation, ils jouent le rôle d’objets minimalistes : stables, indivisibles et non spectaculaires (Debord), paradoxalement neutres, mais empreints de présence.

The World Press Photo grand prize, one of the most important distinctions awarded in the photojournalism field, has been handed out every year since 1955 to the person who makes the image that is most exemplary of a recent current event. These images, true icons of contemporary history, are shown in annual exhibitions presented simultaneously in a number of major world capitals. The "masterpieces" of the news media are symbols of merit and artistic accomplishment, objects of reward and recognition. This article advances the hypothesis that rhetorics of excellence and coronation constitute strategic valorizations of photojournalism in a situation of economic and aesthetic crisis.
