Abstract
While volunteering continues to be a habitual part of libraries, crowdsourcing remains a less-practiced and unknown practice for many of them. However, just like volunteering, crowdsourcing encourages citizen involvement to their regular activities and evokes interest to social involvement.
This article presents the evolution of citizen participation in libraries, through a comparison between traditional volunteering and crowdsourcing, and explores the different facets of the latter to favour a better comprehension of its application and benefits in information science.
