Résumé
Des archétypes de l’Inde persistent à travers le temps grâce à une chaîne continue et répétitive de stéréotypes qui enferment le sujet dans un cercle interprétatif. À partir d’une recherche ethnographique menée auprès d’expatriés occidentaux insérés en Inde dans des zones frontière spécifiques et répondant au fantasme de l’ailleurs, nous voyons ce qu’il advient de ce cercle interprétatif dans la rencontre interculturelle. L’article montre l’influence notable des représentations collectives de l’Inde (et de l’Occident) sur les interactions sociales, de même que leur réappropriation lors de la rencontre. Trois exemples montrent comment les discours et les modes d’organisation sociale des expatriés reproduisent des dichotomies classiques entre l’Inde et l’Occident, et ce, malgré le fait que ceux-ci se réclament d’un statut liminal et d’une posture critique face à la modernité.

Abstract
Archetypes of India persist through time thanks to a continual and repetitive chain of stereotypes, confining the subject in an interpretive circle. Through ethnographic research conducted among Western expatriates living in various borderzones in India, each one corresponding to different fantasies of elsewhere-ness, we shall see what becomes of the interpretive circle during the encounter. The article shows the influence of collective representations of India (and of the West) on social interactions, as well as their reappropriation during the encounter. Three examples will show how discourse as well as modes of social organisation among Western expatriates reproduces classic dichotomies between India and the West, even though expatriates assert their own liminality and their critical stance towards modernity.
