Abstract
What does it mean to give substance to a character in narrative prose ? What figures of thought and of emotion weave the apparition and the vision that give a body to beings of fiction. The reading of the beginning of Chiendent by Raymond Queneau allows us to outline of a kind of “theory” of the character as the apparition under the gaze, as the distinction of one being among others. Some examples taken from Flaubert demonstrate this game of conscience, of expression, of visibility and of inaccessibility that makes the fleeting density of a character which is both an effect of vision and of memory. The sensory apparition of the character is a moment in narrative prose, from Flaubert to Proust, which is marked by a profound rivalry with the pictorial domain.
