AB - This study concerns the story and the storytelling of Armance. It shows how the paralipsis around which the narrative is built is compensated by an insistent strategy of signification of the sexual (and therefore social) handicap from which the hero suffers. Hence, we propose to consider this novel, so fine and so intense in the description of the intimate experience of misfortune, as a case of “masculine writing,” that is anxious to hold an authentic discourse on masculinity, an alternative to the contrived heroic scenarios. It shows the narrative means used by Stendhal for that purpose, with much more depth than Madame de Duras and Latouche.
