Abstract
This article relates a pedagogical approach to exploring current directions in the art made with walrus ivory in Chukotka, Russia. Noting the unprecedented and rapidly expanding diversity in the forms and techniques documented over the course of recent ethnographic research, the article outlines a set of ideas and contexts helpful in examining contemporary practices in walrus ivory art. These include a present-day ethnography of the buyer market and its influence on artistic production, a chronology of pertinent developments during the Soviet and post-Soviet periods, and the author’s take, as that of a practicing artist, on differentiating between the formal and conceptual functions of the imagery found in Bering Strait archaeological materials and the recontextualization of this imagery within present-day practices in Chukotka.

Résumé
Cet article adopte une approche pédagogique pour explorer les tendances actuelles de l’art sur ivoire de morse en Tchoukotka à l’extrême nord-est de la Russie. Notant la diversité sans précédent et l’expansion rapide des formes et des techniques documentées au cours de récents terrains ethnographiques, l’article esquisse un ensemble d’idées et de contextes utiles pour examiner les pratiques contemporaines de l’art sur ivoire. Cet article incluse notamment une ethnographie du marché des acheteurs et de son influence sur la production artistique, une chronologie des développements clés au cours des périodes soviétique et post-soviétique, et la position de l’auteur, en tant qu’artiste, sur la différenciation entre le formel et les fonctions conceptuelles de l’imagerie trouvée dans les matériaux archéologiques du détroit de Béring et la mise en contexte de cette imagerie dans les pratiques actuelles en Tchoukotka.

Аннотация
В данной статье рассматривается педагогический подход к изучению современных направлений в искусстве изготовления изделий из моржового клыка на Чукотке. Отмечая беспрецедентное и быстро растущее разнообразие форм и методов, задокументированных в ходе недавних этнографических исследований, в статье излагается набор идей и контекстов, полезных для изучения современных практик в искусстве с применением моржового клыка. К ним относятся современная этнография рынка покупателей и его влияние на художественное производство, хронология соответствующих событий в советский и постсоветский периоды, а также подход автора, как художника-практика, к обозначению формальных и концептуальных функций образности археологических материалов Берингова пролива и реконтекстуализация этой образности в рамках современной практики чукотских художников.
