Abstract
The idea of entertainment pervades the literary work of Robert Coover: sports, games, cinema, even politics are regarded as pleasurable di versions. But this ludic, oftentimes irreverent, perspective also carries its burden of criticism. Representing what American culture is, is tantamount to pointing out what it might have been. In other words, a survey of America's myths involves determining not only what has shaped and animated those myths, but also what history has chosen to remember of them. In A Night at the Movies, a number of great American film classics are not only reviewed (that is, reinterpreted and substantially corrected) but the very nature and forms of Hollywood entertainment as such become an object of scrutiny.
