En tant que nouveau produit culturel du dernier tiers du XIX^e siècle, le sport pose le problème de son accessibilité. Pour cet article, nous avons décidé d’examiner un des premiers sports à naître au Canada, le curling. De notre recherche, il ressort que la participation des Canadiens français et du milieu ouvrier n’est pas équivalente à leur poids démographique. Un mécanisme de sélection des adeptes par cooptation aura tenu en marge des clubs tous ceux qui ne participaient pas au réseau de la bourgeoisie anglo-britannique du Québec. Le phénomène s’apparente à du favoritisme, une forme d’exclusion discrète.

Abstract

As a cultural product of the last third of the 19^th century, sports pose the problem of their accessibility. To address it, we chose to examine one of the first sports to be born in Canada: curling. From our research, it appears that French-Canadians as well as the working class did not enjoy a level of participation equivalent to their demographic share. A mechanism to select talent through cooptation would have kept all those who did not participate in the bourgeois Anglo-British circles of Quebec at the margins of the clubs. The phenomenon is related to favoritism, a discrete form of exclusion.
